First, the biblical and historical context which impelled the Methodists to mission is surveyed.  Then a critical examination is made of the theology of missionary motivation of Wesley and some of his followers. Finally, the essential elements for the construction of a theology of missionary motivation are presented. Curriculum materials from 96 sources were evaluated according to specific criteria.  Two sample courses were taught in a charismatic church and evaluated by student questionnaires before and after the courses.  A five-stage missionary preparation progrm was developed for local churches including 62 hours of training. It entails placing ministries in urban areas where there is not visible Christian witness. The curriculum is designed to integrate a wholistic mission theology with an understanding of contemporary world issues.  Throughout the curriculum, the Lausanne Covenant is used as a backdrop against which contemporary world situations are viewed, thus forming mission imperatives for the 1990's.
