These networks are explored in the typical western approaches to leadership training and in an ethnographic study of a specific tribal group in the central African context: the Azande. The concept of spiritual deep listening is viewed through the framework of the church history, family ties and in acts of worship through song, prayer, the preached word, as wellas acts of outreach. The concept of the beloved community expressed by Dr. Martin Luther King provides the theoretical framework for viewing the hteology of community expressed at Calvary United Methodist Church as the members struggle to listen to one another, the neighborhood, and the larger community. The research technoques used include observations, workshops and interviews with congregants. Data was also collected using a questionaire designed to sample the congregation for their growth in understanding the concept of listening deeply like Jesus. The result of this project has been an embracing of the active listening model in the communications among church members at Calvary United Methodist Church. Yet today in our increasingly urbanized world, young people are less able to experience the wilderness.  Young people today are unsure how to engage a world of poverty, religions, violence, and clashing civilizations.  Thus, young leaders need reflective dialogue toward a theology of apprenticeship for missions.  In the past 15 years the author has spent nearly a year in the wilderness with groups of young people. Thus while the Igbo naming ceremony makes one an Igbo, the rite of baptism makes one a Christian.  The author analyzed the Anglican rite of baptismal ritual as it is contained in The Book of Common Prayer in the light of Turner's theory of rituals.  He used missional theology as a lens to examine the rite of baptism in the Igbo context of eastern Nigeria. In this qualitative study of one particular congregation, the vital relationship between the praxis of evangelism and how we understand Christian identity will be examined.  A brief survey in the Gospel narratives will be offered to observe the role of Jesus' identity in his ministry and evangelistic witness.  A theological review of the modern reductionism of the gospel and the praxis of evangelism in North America will lead toward a renewed biblical framework for each, rooted in the reign of God.
