Making use of critical pedagogies and its constitutions and statutes, the author attends to the community's tradition, the lived experience of Redemptorists, and the U.S. cultural milieu. The author formulates a process of formation that reimagines an exclusive focus on the individual, positing one that is community centered and dialogic. He addresses three different formative moments for pastoral response; the novitiate, transition to ministry, and ongoing formation. The study promotes a pedagogy that weds the rational, affective, practical ad spiritual. It looks to exemplary teachers, the monastic witness, and the Catholic Worker movement for examples of educational healing and vitality.     The methodology includes narrative, theological reflection, and the relaying of little-known histories.
