To test the validity of this thesis, I preached sermons on hope before different audiences gathered to celebrate different occasions. Some of the people were teary-eyed, a few felt energized, and several faces were radiant--responses indicating that a redemptive transformation took place in peoples' lives. The author assumes that the dynamics inherent in narrative preaching is instrumental in bringing about these responses that can generate hope. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated.  The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent.  The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task. The author uses theological themes borrowed from Paul Pruyser and Elizabeth Whitehead to view these life stories. Thus, biography and autobiography may effectively be used to encourage theological reflection by adults in the church. The project includes a survey of the literature of narrative theology (with particular attention to Stroup, Hauerwas and McClendon) and a discussion of hermeneutical problems. The author proposes a four-step method for biographical theology, and applies it to group studies of the life stories of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and C S Lewis. Not equal but parallel genres, each seeks change in the reader's life through changing the perception of the world. Miller's 'A Canticle for Leibowitz', Leguin's 'The Word for World Is Forest', Herbert's 'The Dragon in the Sea', and Dick's 'The Man in the High Castle' are compared with the gospel's narrative function and its impact on the reader's life.
