In the vernacular of a southern Appalachian culture and with the gospel of Mark as a framework, the author composes an annotated story of a hillbilly Jesus, who emerges from Newport, Tennessee, from the southeastern region near the Great Smoky Mountains. The author's thesis is that preaching based on story or image evokes meaning by connecting the shape of the liturgical celebration with the shape of individual, communal, and pastoral 'liturgies after the liturgy.' Members of the congregation helped to form the sermons, discerning with the author the patterns of the biblical story, the liturgical event, and the stories of their lives.
