For them, the prevailing 'born again' model does not express their personal faith experience.  This project prepared a study which used a narrative approach to explore the faith stories of several New Testament characters and the course participants themselves.  Findings indicated that participants were uncomfortable telling their faith stories before the course.  After they were given a variety of models of faith experience, the participants were more comfortable telling their stories and realized the importance of doing so. Storytelling workshops were conducted in which the participants learned biblical stories, reflected theologically about those stories and related the stories to their personal lives. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated.  The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent.  The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task. Christian worship is the setting for retelling those stories, and within worship the arts add a new dimension which bring the stories to life for the worshippers.  The project is a practical and theological exploration of the use of mime as an art form used in worship.  A mime worship service was developed for a local congregation and a synod meeting to consider the thesis. The arts touch people on a different level than the preached word.  This added dimension allows people to participate in the stories. The Jewish people seemed especially skilled in this form of communication.  Jesus, himself, used stories and story-telling as a powerful means of teaching and proclamation. The six genres I considered were: saga, law, history, wisdom, prophets, and short-story. Updike's theology--which is experienced rather than stated overtly--is useful in a culture which doubts dogmatics.
