The issue chosen was the threat of nuclear war and the nuclear arms race and the method of teaching was a pedagogical approach designed to enhance moral reasoning development. The church can effect its ministry to the world in this context through concerted reflection and action.  The thesis draws upon pertinent readings of theological, ethical, and political literature.  It also reports the methods and outcomes of a lay study group in a Unitarian church on peacemaking. The project involved a five week study on nuclear war, out of which a proposal was presented to the general board of the congregation that Rush Creek Christian Church become a 'shalom congregation'. This is a national program of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) which involves a congregation committing one year of making the issue of peace the center of their worship, study, and action.  The motion to become a 'shalom congregation' failed.
