Chapter 1 presents data that substantiate the rapid aging of the American population and the impact and responsibility of the church to this age wave.  In Chapter 2, current data about retirees are presented with relevant projected data.  Chapter 3 is a study of key biblical passages. To accomplish this task, open-ended interviews with seven women in the 73-78 year-old range have been conducted: two married, two single, two widowed, and one divorced. Additionally, there have been conversations with the daughters of a second divorced woman who died before the scheduled interview. This relationship transcends all other sources of meaning, many of which will be lost in old age.  The heart of the paper is a survey of older adults.  Responses to the survey are discussed in light of the theories presented. Psychological theories include the psychosocial stages of Erik Erikson, the constructive developmental approach of Robert Kegan, object relations theory, and a study of faith development using the stages of faith of James Fowler. The project applies the concept of hospitality to the development of a specialized older adult ministry.  The study examines the characteristics and needs of older adults and notes the biases held by society against the elderly.  By using insights from social marketing theory, hospitality was expressed by carrying out need assessment, program design, implementation, and evaluation for an older adult ministry in a particular congregation. An evangelistic program entitled the ISAAC plan (Inviting Senior Adults to Accept Christ) was established. Project data comes from older adults interacting within separate groups who, differing by age, religious affiliation, health, cultural-ethnicity, gender, and education, met weekly for sixteen weeks sharing 'stories of aging' and responding to questionnaires and studies in aging.  Participants' responses focus on the church's role in empowering older adults to create prophetic, serving, hopeful communities of peers.
