Two groups of elderly persons participated in the study: one living independently in the community and the other receiving volunteer services of a coalition organization of faith communities.  Needs identified were depression, fear, anxiety, loneliness, anger, guilt and lack of belief after death. Quite simply, one generation is having to take care of two generations.  This occurs as older members of society live longer than historically has been the case. Thus, the dilemma of the middle generation, identified as the sandwich generation, is exacerbated by caring for both children at home and elderly parents who need physical, financial, or medical assistance, creating a drain on the resources of all family members.  This project examines the factors contributing to this phenomena, primarily through a review of contemporary literature.  The project also addresses possible ways to alleviate the burden placed upon the sandwich generation, and what the future of the family holds if current trends continue.  The church should play a significant role in the life of the elderly. In so doing, it assists the sandwich generation in caring for elderly parents. Adult children find themselves attempting to balance concern for their parents, their children, and their careers.  With little or no understanding of elder care before it is thrust upon them, adult children need to learn about the physical, emotional and spiritual needs that accompany the aging process.  This project revealed a wealth of information not readily recognized by caregivers. A theology of pastoral care is provided. A design for a reproducible program of general visitation by persons in a congregation is given.  Forms are provided for assessing one's spiritual condition.  Growth in visitation skills is measured by a pre- and post-test given to each visitor. Spiritual growth of the visitors is assessed. This project at Parkvue Healthcare in Sandusky, Ohio met families in their daily lives by providing scripture based suggestions for proactive relationship building.  A pretest of family members ascertained the degree of connection to their resident and related areas of anxiety.  Following the pretest, a monthly Internet correspondence was established providing scripture, exegesis, reflection and a suggested action. It addressed the common lack of security and certainty in the spiritual lives of elderly believers.  Using narrative form and the text's own poetic imagery, the presentation communicated both cognitively and intuitively the heart of Scripture as a means of cultivating assurance and hope in Christ in those whose rational faculties are diminishing.  The study was evaluated by personal observation and by both formal and informal interviews.
