They equate it with the heavy-handed or manipulative tactics of evangelical or fundamentalist Christians whose only goal is to convert others to the Christian faith to avoid hell. Given the prevalence of church trauma and spiritual abuse many have personally and vicariously experienced, theologically progressive college ministries struggle to understand how to faithfully do evangelism. The researcher sought to address that issue through a process of retrieval for use in his modern-day congregation. Looking for guidance from a significant homiletical figure of the past who married his theology to his practice of preaching, this project distilled the homiletical method of John Calvin into a series of nine Homiletical Principles. These Principles were based on Calvin’s sermons, writings, and on secondary research about Calvin. Those nine Homiletical Principles were then applied in a series of sermons preached to the researcher's congregation, where their impact was subsequently assessed using a basic qualitative research design. The research evaluated the impact of those Principles through a series of surveys, evaluations, and interviews to gauge the experience of participants. Through this analysis, it is hoped that by looking back to the past, practitioners will be emboldened to move forward with more confident expositions of God’s Word.
