It is then possible to choose which philosophical assumptions of secular personality theories and counseling methods are compatible with a Christian worldview and which are to be rejected by the discerning Christian counselor. This project was designed to help Christians be more intentional about cultivating their marital relationships. The purpose of this project in ministry was to build biblical Christian marriages that would withstand the challenges that arise in the marital context. The research question asked was,'If Christians are equipped by their minister for marriage enrichment, will their marriages be strengthened?' The research explored God's willingness to dialogue, His provision for a wonderful counselor and Adam and Eve's hiding from God. A review of relevant literature relating to resistance revealed gender, social stigma, self-disclosure, problem analysis, and the identity of the help source as factors related to resistance levels. A survey of 221 individuals from one church identified that reasons for resistance were consistent with findings of the literature review. It was based on pastoral visits with five families of the chronically ill and the illness of the author's husband. The hypothesis was that the chronically ill and their families face unique challenges and needs for pastoral care not observed in acute or terminal illness due to the 'ongoingness' of the chronic disease or injury. A Family Systems approach and theological reflection were used to analyze the experiences. The hypothesis was proven correct. Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ involves transformation and relies on the sufficiency of God's grace to produce change in a person's life. However, traumatic events and the influence of Post-modernism present unique challenges to the discipleship process. This project uses an eight week study to help new Christians who have experienced trauma begin growing in their faith while addressing real life issues resulting from these events.
