The researcher devised an eight week support group with two major goals in mind: 1) To help parents understand and work through grief that accompanies parent-child separation.  2) To assist parents in long distance parenting.  The theological research identified major motifs of separation in both the Old and New Testaments.  The study sought to construct a theology that engages the reality of separation within the context of creation and covenant.  The social/psychological research focused on Bowlby's process of mourning and Bloom's stages of bereavement as applied to the parent-child relationship. Also Bridges work on 'transitions' helped to reveal the perilous passages one negotiates in life. The literature review seeks to demonstrate the thesis theoretically.  In practice, the thesis is demonstrated quantitatively and qualitatively by the use of a questionnaire and interviews with patients. The following areas were examined: acceptance of the chaplain's ministry, the chaplain's supportive ministry, the chaplain's ministry to help the patient cope, and the chaplain's ministry to the patient's private concerns.  The findings demonstrate that there is a high level of satisfaction with each aspect of pastoral care. The chapter ends with several brief summaries of emerging and developing programs of Community Based Spiritual Care. The theological context for developing the model included biblical realism, a praxis liberation, and a revised correlational method, particularly in the writings of D S Browning and T H Groome.  The model of pastoral guidance was unlike brief counseling or crisis intervention.  This three to four session model focused on spiritual discernment concerning a particular issue, using guided meditation, homework, and longer breaks between sessions. The author uses the metaphor of The Journey to the West, a popular Chinese classic novel, which is analogous to the current situation and perceptions of many Chinese immigrants searching for a better future in life in the United States. He integrates two primary elements as the foundational models of pastoral care:  Jürgen Moltmann's Theology of Hope provides the underlying basis, with Andrew Lester's concept of Hope and Future as a major factor in this thesis.
