Project Associates and Consulting Faculty assisted the author in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation phases of the project.  Implementation was carried out in a six month period at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Elida, Ohio.  Six case histories were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the materials and counseling sessions. Four sermons on baptism were preached during implementation. The project explored the need for such training and the reasons for the high rate of alcoholism and the growing number of suicides.  It discovered that the Cherokee pastor is the key to helping his people.  The author examined the biblical background for crisis counseling with alcoholic and suicidal persons and laid a theoretical foundation to equip pastors to minister to such persons.  The major emphasis of the project was the procedures used in selecting and training a core group of pastors in strategic areas of the Cherokee Nation.  The team concentrated on three major areas of concern in their preparation for enlarged Christian ministry. It is entitled therapeutic theology.  It includes both theological preparation and resources to equip the pastor for the pastoral care of victims. Resources and techniques for counseling are included, as well as ways to sensitize and involve the congregation. While working with divorced people the author discovered one theme that is common to nearly all divorce situations, the theme of loneliness.  To address the theme of loneliness he modeled his procedure after William B Ogleby Jr's book Biblical themes for pastoral care. Oglesby underscores the importance of using the biblical story to intersect life themes. Participants are counseling clients experiencing depression and low self-worth, along with local church members who desire to work on these issues.  There are observed attitude and behavioral changes for both clients and non-clients. It is based on the thesis that, through a proper understanding of spiritual guidance, the Lutheran pastor can be greatly helped in guiding individuals in their spiritual journey and formation. Spiritual guidance is presented wtihin the context of contemporary spirituality, showing how it differs from pastoral counseling. It is the firm conviction of the author that the ancient practices of meditative prayer, or 'prayer of the heart,' and active imagery can be fully integrated with the latest developments in psychology and counseling and used successfully by pastoral counselors.
