The issue of God-forsakeness was examined from a biblical and historical perspective.  Problems posed by this kind of existential theodicy were examined, as were solutions which have been proposed.  A questionnaire discovered that 56 per cent of the congregation admitted to having felt forsaken by God. To become a spiritual director there must be a movement from 'knowing' the history of the discipline to becoming part of the on-going integrative process of living in the mystery of the discipline.  This paper examines this integrative process by investigating historical perspectives on growth in the spiritual life cura animarum, defining spiritual direction as an integrative process; and using insights from Jungian psychology in developing not only principles of pastoral counseling, but principles for spiritual direction. After covering the foundations of the development and organization of cognitive, emotional and linguistic meaning systems for the individual, the author reinterprets psychodynamic concepts as metaphors which can be used in therapy to help the client describe his or her internal mechanisms and process.  The use of metaphors to elicit change in meaning systems is portrayed, particularly in terms of developing a sense of self-love in the client. These commonalities become appropriate considerations in the tasks of 1) pastoral psychotherapy and 2) the language of theology.  A methodology of stepwise interviews was incorporated in a qualitative study of ten 'barren' women.  This population was chosen under the assumption that the frustration of the childbearing capacity engendered in a woman who wanted to bear children a necessity to articulate and thereby resolve her loss. The results indicate, in the context of childbearing, commonalities in the use of certain metaphors, styles of speaking, types of experience, and ways of relating to oneself, others, and God.
