About  the  same  time  as  the article ,  'Deliver  Us  From  This  Domine :  The  Problem  of  Clergy Immobility'  by  Alvin  J.  Poppen  was  printed,  I  was  searching for  a  topic  for  my  project.  The  project  evolved  out  of  a wedding  of  Poppen's   concern  for  clergy  immobility  and  longer pastorates  and  my  concern  for  good  preaching. A  search  for  information  turned  up  few  resources.  I could  only  find  two  books  and  a  few  articles  on long pastorates. No  one had  written  extensively  on the combination of long pastorates  and  preaching.  The combination  seemed  to  be  a  current  and  fascinating  topic  for further  investigation.  The  project  evolved  to  the  point where  I  sought  to  understand  the  relationship  of  good preaching  to  the  healthy,  long  pastorate. The  project  looked  to  the Reformed  Church  in  America  as  the  larger  arena.  It  is  my denominational  affiliation.  The  project  narrowed  the  arena to  those  churches  having  long  pastorates  concurrent  with  the beginning  of  the  investigation. The plan included: identifying personal problems among attenders through an initial churchwide survey; addressing the problems in six sermons; evaluating the success of the attempt to address the problems by means of a weekly written survey, a sermon discussion group, and a second churchwide survey.  A slight improvement in addressing problems through sermons was made. More improvement was noted in relevance than in effectiveness. The thesis summarizes work done in foundations of gestalt therapy, a pastoral care model presented by Clebsch and Jaekle (healing, sustaining, guiding, reconciling), and primary chemical dependency treatment (utilizing the Minnesota Model).  The author then presents case illustrations dealing with an individual stuck in past history, a  family with communication difficulties, a couple trapped by the past, a grief experience, and an individual seeking a sense of safety. A theology of pastoral care is provided. A design for a reproducible program of general visitation by persons in a congregation is given.  Forms are provided for assessing one's spiritual condition.  Growth in visitation skills is measured by a pre- and post-test given to each visitor. Spiritual growth of the visitors is assessed. The study involved eight learning sessions that identified the strengths which members had for a ministry of care. Individuals were trained to creatively use skills of caregiving to members and to the mission community of Bethany Christian Church in time of need.  The project also provided ways for participants who were unable to attend the sessions to become involved in caregiving.
