The care-giving ministries proposed by this project are unique in that it is not accomplished by professionals, but by the missionaries themselves, by lay facilitators selected and trained for the task, and that it is to be carried out on the mission field where missionaries work, and not in the home country. In this community of faith persons are empowered to minister in the midst of their own finitude and sense of brokenness, and discover God's strength in their apparent weakness.  The implicit challenge in this model is for the church to discover ways in which persons can continue to hear God's call in the ambiguity of their lives and find ever new and creative ways to respond to the living God on their own faith journey. Its theological justification comes from the fact that pastor and laity alike share in the shepherding ministry of Jesus Christ in the church.  To both equip my present lay shepherds in the 'basics' of pastoral care and to motivate them to train, in turn, still more shepherds, I proceeded as follows: I led ten of these lay shepherds through a series of eight 'shepherding seminars' on the biblical/theological justifications for giving pastoral care; the four 'givens' of human life; the ten stages of grief; the differentiation of different types of depression; and the development of empathetic listening skills. At the conclusion of these studies, each of the now 'trained' shepherds was assigned some aspect of the aforementioned topics and asked to teach it to a small cadre of 'untrained' shepherds newly recruited from the congregation at large.
