The project was designed to train the diaconate to minister more effectively to the needs of the congregation.  The role of the deacon as minister and how he functions within our church were given special emphasis in the training sessions.  The study clarified the role of deacon through a study of pastoral care skills. The study provided the deacons with practical experience. Because many ministries to this population are patronizing in nature, leave out the families, and are not intentional in training and implementation, the need was felt to develop a plan which would be more comprehensive and intentional. The planning committee then took the work of the other three committees and developed three to five years of caring plans. Three primary sources of expectations are surveyed: the scriptures, Baptist traditions, and contemporary Baptist expectations concerning pastoral ministry.  A profile of contemporary expectations is available through international research reported in Ministry in America (1980).  Research among Mid-American Baptists by the author corroborates the international results. The purpose of this project was the development of a procedural manual, which will enable pastors in the North American Baptist Conference (NABC) to gain insight into how a good ministry fit can be found. The research methodology entailed a series of interviews. The sample interviewed represented 12.8 percent of the overall number of pastors in the conference who had recently gone through pastoral transition. The project establishes eight phases of the transition process. The issues of each phase are detailed. The final section of the project is 'A Pastoral Transition Manual.' The completed manual enables the pastor to place a comprehensive profile in the data system of the NABC placement office, and addresses the issues the pastor will face in the process of
