Through a retreat, individuals engage in contemplative creative expression as a tool for spiritual formation and transformation. Working in collaboration with JustPeace, the United Methodist's Center for Mediation and Conflict Transformation, the retreat model was reviewed by the organization for use in the work of transforming congregational conflict. Peacemaking in the church is an unavoidable call for pastors and church members. They need to put into practice biblical, redemptive ways for peacebuilding as they respond to conflict. The author presented such tools as biblical texts on conflict transformation like Acts 15 and 1 Corinthians 1, narrative theology and narrative leadership in order to claim the biblical faith in Jesus, the Crucified and the Mediator. The methodology incorporated a two-item questionnaire, modified case studies, and follow-up interviews with four of the twenty-five participants.  The five categories from Women's Ways of Knowing by Belenky, et al, asessed each woman's level of individuation and differentiation. However, the change from a closed sect to an open church has brought changes in their understanding of a peace commitment.  This paper focuses on peace as a model of hermeneutics in the church.  The history of the church is investigated to uncover a hermeneutic.  To discover the contemporary understanding of peace, a questionnaire is mailed to 278 Brethren in Christ ministers.  The returns are compared with the historical research.  Results show strong support for a peace commitment with new understandings and applications.
