The candidate verified the need for pastoral peer groups through field research within Craig-Mayes Baptist Association and in the Oklahoma Baptist General Convention. Participants received training and encouragement to select their personal peer group during an initial orientation seminar and were equipped to engage their peer groups in twelve subsequent weekly meetings. Biblical foundations for this work exist in stories about Moses and the letter to the Philippians.  There are also historical precedents.  Various studies have found that such groups can help individuals manage stress.  Forty ministry personnel were invited to participate in this study as part of facilitated, non-facilitated or control groups.  Stress and coping were measured using Human Synergistic's Stress Processing Report. The project employs a pro-active research method to study the practice of peer counseling with African American youth. The Teen Connection project found that African American youth desire help from others, are receptive to help from peers, and are willing to be trained to help peers. Teen Connection peer counselors demonstrated their capability and willingness to become involved in responsible and challenging Christian service that ministered to the needs of their peers. The project describes the existing lay counseling program at Rolling Hills Covenant Church (Rolling Hills Estates, California) and evaluates the success of the program through the spiritual well-being scale, the counseling program training questionnaire, the target complaints worksheet, and the post-counseling questionnaire.  The study concluded with affirmative results to all the evaluation measures, reporting positive responses from the counselors trained and from the counselees who saw those counselors.  Recommendations were made for pastors to think relationally in their Bible teaching and training, and for professional Christian therapists to think biblically in their counseling. The research was condensed, structured and presented to selected trainees who would possibly become facilitators of local ministerial support groups.  Positive results have been established by six of the trainees. Participants expressed a dilemma of choice between themselves and their communities of ministry. Mutual ministry offers a resolution, and includes becoming empowered and empowering others together.
