The hypothesis of this project was that 'Personality types, as defined by Jung and measured by the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, significantly influence the way a preacher presents the material from the biblical text in his sermons.'  The result of this project was that there was a significant difference between the way that the Sensing personality type and the Intuitive personality type preach. It was hypothesized that Jungian Personality Type Theory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator could be effective means for enhancing students' self-understanding.  A teaching program was designed to study the effects.  A quasi-experimental method and a portfolio assessment of students learning were employed.  The findings indicated affirmative but not conclusive evidence. It suggests that the MBTI is not a highly regarded instrument psychometrically.  Further that much of the methodology currently employed is largely based upon influence and impression.  Lastly, the Jungian personality theory and method may not be the most desirable theoretical base for correlational studies.  My alternative seeks to observe and quantify purported relationships.  It employs a personality theory based upon factor analysis and the Sixteen Personality Questionnaire (16PF) as a preferred psychometric instrument.  This dissertation is largely a response to earlier work done by Michael and Norrisey.  It is a critique of Jungian typology and the MBTI. The null hypothesis stated that there will be no significant differences in selected personality traits between people who continue in a disciple-making ministry and people who do not.  The method involved administering a biographical data sheet, a twenty-question religiosity survey and the multidimensional personality questionnaire to a sample group of 120 individuals who had been involved in disciple-making ministry.  The mean scores of the sample group were compared with the general population mean scores. It utilized three pretests and one posttest.  Each student was given the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator test, the LEAD test, and a knowledge test.  The knowledge test was repeated as a posttest.  The pretest results were used to place students in task assignments which seemed to match their personality preferences.  A curriculum of twelve lessons on various areas of leadership was developed and taught during the project.  Each student applied the concepts taught in the lessons to field experiences with his or her peers.  A personal debriefing session with the project director was held weekly to apply and interpret the student's performance in the field experiences.  The project seemed to indicate that consideration of personality type is helpful in determining  task assignments. Also the combination of training, personal instruction and field experience was deemed effective and was appreciated by the student leaders. Careful guidance gives the new chaplain an opportunity to develop his or her intrinsic value.
