Area surveys reveal more needs than churches are able to satisfy.  This project demonstrates ways to recognize resources and provides methods to move from problem oriented to innovative planning. He adapts it to the setting of a local church planning retreat.  It is discovered that, although communal spiritual discernment is a viable alternative, it demands more personal and corporate preparation and skill in prayer and discernment than most congregations possess. The project successfully helped a selected church write and adopt the following:  a statement of purpose; a one year ministry objective; three goals that facilitate the achievement of the objective; and action plans to carry out their objective and goals. It enumerates the distinctive features of United Methodist churches which may help or hinder growth.  The project then examines growth potential of a specific congregation.  It suggests a model for a five year growth plan and a process for implementing these recommendations. Following the development of a church-specific version of plannaging manuals, selected clergy were trained as trainers who in turn trained one hundred fifty pastors throughout New England in the use of plannaging.  This training enabled these pastors to use plannaging in their personal and professional life. This project tested the hypothesis by means of a series of planning sessions designed around major points of Barth's ecclesiology.  Each of these sessions consisted of lessons on the nature and mission of the church followed by periods of program analysis and planning.
