The thesis was primarily an engagement with literature and ideas, with a small survey component.  The author developed a practical theology of beauty, primarily referencing the work of David Bentley Hart, and an approach to a definition of beauty, referencing Immanuel Kant's Third Critique.  He offered five descriptors for beauty: Fitness, Durability, Motion, Force, and Metaphor.  With this established, he offered a poetics of homiletics, considering beauty in language through the work of poetry, finally applied to preaching composition."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130912290766848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:08.373Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:54:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:32:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6fcaeafa-4c86-44ce-a504-1fddb945af55","accessControl_ssim":["6e0fe8c0-de14-436f-b156-831a4255a4de"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Poetic preaching in a post-modern world"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:54:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:24:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1aeb6dd0-6c9f-4fc0-a95c-08d36e46f4fa"],"hasLease_ssim":["f83a461b-592c-4a04-b3a0-34c1eac3adbe"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Seabury-Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ted Curtis"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kevin Douglas Huddleston"],"publisher_tesim":["Seabury-Western Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Preaching","Poetics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis argues that the church of the 21st century is closer in body, mind and soul to the pre-Constantinian church than it is to the church of a mere fifty years ago.  It contends that examining the preaching of the first three centuries can assist the current preacher.  It further asserts that the preaching of the early church was more 'poetic' in nature and that by adopting a more poetic style we will be better equipped to preach in a pluralistic, post-modern environment and recapture a genre of biblical literature that has been neglected in the field of homiletics.  Finally, this thesis will propose some practical ways in which contemporary preachers can become more 'poetic' in their preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126731407491072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:32:41.172Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:54:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:48:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1f20d0eb-497f-47d4-8828-aba0ae1b1249","accessControl_ssim":["3ec01cec-7568-4e37-bb91-c2a1ee064974"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching poetically to a homiletically traditional congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:54:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:03:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f6c3f44b-7025-4cbd-b318-fba0a12c1072"],"hasLease_ssim":["789446ca-a9b6-4f37-a054-edd03b8a83f0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anna Carter Florence"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thomas L Griffis"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Aristotle","Bible--Criticism, interpretation","Preaching","Poetics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Poetic preaching facilitates transformation in people so they become more responsive to God's Kingdom of faith, hope, and love.  Aristotle's science of literature, called Poetics, is a strategy for reading and interpreting scripture and for preaching that creates an encounter with God during which the people experience themselves as claimed by God for life in God's Kingdom.  The strategy identifies ways the drama of scripture imitates life through plot, language, characters, and reason. Through the faculty of imagination, the preacher interprets scripture using these poetic elements and transports the same into the sermon.  The congregants enter into the drama both of scripture and sermon, locating themselves in the plot, identifying with the characters, and experiencing new alternatives for life as Christian disciples."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127702611165184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:48:07.384Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Kevin Douglas Huddleston","hits":1,"label":"Kevin Douglas Huddleston"},{"value":"Thomas L Griffis","hits":1,"label":"Thomas L Griffis"},{"value":"Vernon K Rempel","hits":1,"label":"Vernon K Rempel"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Poetics","hits":3,"label":"Poetics"},{"value":"Preaching","hits":2,"label":"Preaching"},{"value":"Aesthetics","hits":1,"label":"Aesthetics"},{"value":"Aristotle","hits":1,"label":"Aristotle"},{"value":"Bible--Criticism, interpretation","hits":1,"label":"Bible--Criticism, interpretation"},{"value":"Hart, David B","hits":1,"label":"Hart, David B"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":3,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Iliff School of Theology","hits":1,"label":"Iliff School of Theology"},{"value":"Seabury-Western Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Seabury-Western Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":3,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2004","hits":1,"label":"2004"},{"value":"2005","hits":1,"label":"2005"},{"value":"2007","hits":1,"label":"2007"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":2,"label":"Miscellaneous"},{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Iliff School of Theology","hits":1,"label":"Iliff School of Theology"},{"value":"Seabury-Western Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Seabury-Western Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":3,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":3,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
