The benefits of combining pastoral care, sermon preparation, and preaching in a retreat setting to several married couples are explored. Designed to help couples develop healthy relationship skills and competencies, the sermons provide biblical references, theological information, and practical tools of pastoral counselors. I show through contextual practice how couples learn skills and receive tools to assist them with cultivating a healthy marriage. Luke","Preaching","System theory"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Anxiety today is rising and building, one crisis after another, and yet the church remains an important refuge for many, serving to mediate that anxiety. Preaching in particular, as a central function of the church, plays a significant mitigating role. The purpose of this study is to explore how senior pastors preach Christ-centered sermons to lower anxiety in congregational systems.The literature review focuses on four key areas: Jesus’ teaching on anxiety in Luke 12, anxiety in family systems perspective, the experience of anxiety in the person, and modern sources of anxiety.This study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight pastors who have served congregations for five years or longer in the role of senior pastor. Four research questions guided this qualitative study: 1. How do senior pastors describe the presence of anxiety in the congregational system? 2. How do senior pastors understand the impact of their presence on anxiety in the congregational system? 3. How do senior pastors negotiate their own anxiety as a part of the congregational system? 4. How do senior pastors describe sermons that lower anxiety in the congregational system?The findings of this study reveal four components required to preach Christ-centered sermons that lower anxiety in the congregational system: discerning systemic realities of the congregation, practicing a non-anxious presence, shaping interpretive frameworks, and communicating in a manner that is challenging yet not coercive. Keller’s methodology for preaching is Christ-centered, text-centered, compassionate, exegetically sound, and pastoral. He applies some elements of text-driven preaching. This project chooses twenty of Keller’s sermons from the Old and New Testaments in three different genres (Story, Poetry, and Epistles) to examine his preaching model. This project’s primary goal is to enhance pastoral ministry’s effectiveness through preaching, particularly in moments of crisis and tragedy.John M. Frame’s Perspectives on the Word of God and Vern S. Poythress’s Symphonic Theology shape Keller’s three-perspective model for preaching. Both of them argue that applying multiple exegesis perspectives helps deliver absolute truth and relevant application in the different contexts of the audience. Keller’s preaching methodology can be named “incarnational preaching” because Christ’s incarnation and ministries are evident in all these three perspectives. The result shows that Keller applies almost equal emphasis to both biblical and situational perspectives in his sermons. Sometimes he applies more emphasis to the situational perspective than to the biblical perspective so that the modern audience could comprehend and apply biblical truth to their lives. Additionally, Keller’s personal view takes less than 14 percent of his sermons. It shows that his personal experience and preferences do not dominate his sermons. Keller is willing to share his weakness and get involved with the audience. He shows his compassion for the suffering and expresses his passion for the Gospel. Keller is like a friend of the bridegroom to show that Christ is the center of the entire wedding because “he (Christ) must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:29-30).Keller demonstrates how to balance, integrate, and unite biblical, situational, and personal perspectives in his preaching. By observing Keller’s sermons, preachers could find that utilizing Keller’s three-perspective model helps explain the text and capture the whole picture. Chapter One proposes connoisseurship as a fruitful metaphor for building an appreciation for what makes for effective and transformative preaching with its slow, steady, and ongoing practice of tasting and reflecting. Chapter Two invites adult learning theory—and the burgeoning field of transformative learning theory born of it—into the conversation to inform both the structure and content of the reflective practice pages that are the building blocks of the thesis project intervention. In conversation with the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States, the chapter offers a preliminary list of key principles salient to the pedagogical design of the project intervention.  Chapter Three brings in the lens of practical theology with its consistent starting point in everyday lived practice and experience to sharpen the focus toward the deep faith context of this thesis project. The faith practices of preaching within the context of Eucharist and teaching preaching within the context of a deacon formation program suggest additional site-specific pedagogical concerns. The elements of a site-specific instructional design are now in place. Chapter Four details the thesis project learning intervention. The chapter outlines the purpose and process of the preparatory research that resulted in the project catalogue of characteristics and quotations, and it provides a thick description of diaconal formation in the Diocese of Evansville, with special attention to the role of Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, Evansville’s partner in diaconal formation. An annotated example of a weekly reflective practice page and an analysis of its components relative to the site-specific pedagogical principles proposed in Chapter Three completes the chapter.Chapter Five presents and analyzes the qualitative data collected over the twenty-three weeks of the project with respect to both aggregate and individual participant trajectories toward connoisseurship of effective preaching. They are long-time church-goers who have attended Sunday school lessons and heard sermons on biblical texts enough to breed a familiarity that can prevent further insight. The preacher must find a way to bypass familiarity, allowing hearers to experience the text anew. This study measures how six sermons employing humor subvert expectations to give a renewed experience of Jesus’ descriptions of the Kingdom of God in the parables in Matthew’s Gospel.Twelve participants were interviewed in three sessions over six weeks to measure how effective humor is in communicating the complex and counter-cultural Kingdom of God that Jesus expresses in the parables. The group was interviewed together in three semi-structured sessions to allow participants to give their insights and experiences with limited researcher prompting.Participant responses indicate that humor indeed aided in experiencing familiar parables with a new perspective, a sense of personal interaction, and a desire to act upon the principles of the Kingdom as presented in the sermons. Humor can provide a fresh experience for preachers and congregations alike. Further study should be conducted in utilizing humor to preach texts of other biblical genres, such as the Hebrew prophets, proverbs, psalms, and epistles. God speaks to people through the “liturgical language” of worship— the literal and figurative words used and the material signs and symbols of worship practices. Worshipers often respond by describing their experience in theological language (theology literally means “words about God”). Implementing the methodological approach of pastoral ethnography, this  project sought to understand the relationship between the liturgical language of certain worship practices and the theology of worshipers at First Baptist of West Jefferson, NC. In particular, how do worshipers at First Baptist experience what they had previously described as the “blessing” of God’s presence and love through sermons with concurrent liturgical responses?The researcher utilized the speech-act theory of J. L. Austin’s work How to Do Things with Words as an interpretive tool of the performative nature of six sermons with concurrent liturgical responses. The performative impact of these sermons and responses was explored for six consecutive weeks in the Sunday morning worship service at First Baptist. Through data collected from weekly surveys and a handful of focus groups, participants revealed the performative nature of the sermons and concurrent liturgical responses, and how they experienced the blessing of God’s presence and love through the liturgical language of the sermons and concurrent practices.The project revealed important lessons about the performative nature of liturgical language, particularly how members of First Baptist experience the blessing of God’s love and presence through sermons and concurrent liturgical responses.
