Two issues--the nature of God's Word and the nature of men and women as listeners--supply the theological foundation for listening to biblical preaching or teaching, which is discussed in chapter two. A third chapter surveys the literature of listening, noting especially the limited contributions of sacred writers in contrast to the extensive resources available from secular perspectives. The work includes several tools to help pastors and churches who would like to train their people in listening. These include a discussion of preaching on listening, along with several sermons; a small group study on listening to preaching; and a three hour listening seminar. The final chapter provides a summary of what the author learned through this study and suggestions for training church members in listening. The model was developed from a survey of relevant literature in the fields of preaching, communication, persuasion, transfer learning, and postmodernism.  The study took place at Parkway United Methodist Church, a new church reaching families in the suburbs southwest of Houston, Texas. Nineteen people participated in the study by completing a series of pretest questionnaires.  The questionnaires sought to determine to what extent they demonstrated the characteristics of a postmodern person, a baseline for determining their spiritual well-being, and the extent to which they were engaged in specific spiritual habits. Each participant then listened to a five-week sermon series on developing spiritual habits, each sermon speaking to a different habit (prayer, Bible study, giving, outreach, and ministry).  Each week of the sermon series every attendee at Parkway UMC was encouraged to complete a brief questionnaire seeking to determine to what extent they felt the sermon that week fit the model for preaching to encourage discipleship.  Three weeks and eight weeks after the sermon series the participants were again tested to determine if there was any change in their spiritual well being and if they showed any measurable increase in the spiritual habits covered in the sermons. The questionnaires indicated:  1) the participants demonstrated a mixture of modern and postmodern characteristics; 2) there was not a significant increase in spiritual well-being as measured by the Spiritual Well-Being scale; 3) the participants did demonstrate a measurable increase in participation of the habits preached about in the sermon series; and 4) the attendees at Parkway UMC agreed that the sermons in the series fit the model for preaching for discipleship.  The major findings of the study include the following observations:  postmodern characteristics are not limited to a specific age group, but can be demonstrated across a spectrum of ages. In order to do this, the project director researched sermons and created a sermon model. The project directory created eight part model sermons to his congregation during Sunday worship. A group of experts assessed the model sermons and their assessments were used to determine the sermons’ effect and reach. From the research and assessments the project director was able to find the key factors of sermon skills and made a plan to improve sermon skills. He also looked at the before and after of the congregation’s spiritual awareness to find changes and made that the focus of his results. As this emphasis on preaching has become increasingly more important, reflected by post-conciliar documents and statements by the popes following the council, the question remains: has the seminary curriculum changed with this emphasis to ensure that the clergy are properly trained for preaching.  This research project reviews the literature of evaluation of preaching over the last three decades along with the changes in requirements for homiletics in the five editions of the Program of Priestly Formation.  The author developed a research tool using Appreciative Inquiry and interviewed homiletics professors at six Roman Catholic theologates in the United States to aggregate the 'best preaching practices' in these homiletics programs.  The aggregated results demonstrate that in fact improvements have been made in the preaching programs. This thesis project focuses on one immigrant group and their children: U.S. Catholic Hispanics. It attempts to respond to the challenge of these Hispanic parents attempting to hand on the Catholic faith to their children. It makes the unexpected claim that preaching is essential part of helping these parents address this difficulty. Chapter 1 describes the demography of the U.S. Catholic Church in 2018. The influx of Hispanic immigrants is set in the context of a larger influx of immigrants, such as Asians, Africans, and Pacific Islanders. After considering this broad context, this thesis focuses on Hispanic Catholics and the religious education level of their parents and children. The problem is that Hispanic parents are not transmitting the Catholic faith to their confirmation teenage children. That is one reason among others why their teenagers and young adults disengage from the Catholic Church. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate through catechetical preaching that Hispanic parents can learn skills to transmit the Catholic faith successfully to their confirmation teenage children. Chapter 2 provides the necessary background for the thesis project's intervention: Hispanic Catechesis in the U.S. in 2018. Before arriving at this goal, however, it is necessary to examine the Catholic Church's understanding of catechesis and interculturalism. Effective catechesis will involve not only appropriate pedagogies but also a cultural analysis of the society in which catechists teach. Chapter 3 starts with the history of the Catholic homily from Vatican II until the papacy of Pope Francis. Next, the chapter introduces catechesis and discusses whether the Sunday homily should be catechetical in nature. These two themes then lead to the culmination of the project: cross-cultural catechetical preaching to Hispanic parents in 2018. The principal investigator will attempt to paint a portrait of this complex reality. Chapter 4 describes the intervention. The principal investigator developed a thirteen-week course for Hispanic parents and their confirmation children. He employed the tool of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) at the beginning of the course and interviewed all parents and their children both before and after the course. He also took field notes during the course to note observations of growth both in parents and in their children. He then analyzes the qualitative research for the thesis project: the initial two sessions of AI, initial interviews, and final interviews.  Chapter 5 presents the final product created from the thesis project's research data.
