The congregational story project, entitled Discovering Trinity's Angel, entailed videotaping long-time members, sharing remembrances of the innovative ways the congregation communicated the gospel throughout its history. These stories were shown in worship throughout Lent, 2006, and were accompanied by presentations on the influence of media in biblical and church history. The impact of biblical storytelling and the Discovering Trinity's Angel project were measured by both survey and focus groups. The project found that by experiencing the stories of its past, the congregation understood the challenge to further develop its digital culture ministry as consistent with its historic identity and mission."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127785177088000,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:49:26.124Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:13:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:02:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7922668c-9b6f-4811-b4cb-876fb4b290e0","accessControl_ssim":["aa2e29a1-0c2e-4c65-907d-898264cf39d1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Forward in faith: congregational discernment and the model of the Peace, Unity, and Purity Taskforce of the Presbyterian Church (USA)"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:13:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:41:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["043b968a-d5b2-4837-a5a8-d0741e6072c1"],"hasLease_ssim":["470c7ebc-183a-4c00-9164-17ebc8c23044"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Mark Douglas","D Cameron Murchison"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert W Lowry"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Theological Task Force on Peace, Unity, and Purity of the Church","Congregations","Discernment (Christian theology)","Presbyterian Church","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Conflict management","Strategic planning"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The question of how to discern a vision for the future has been an issue for Presbyterian congregations. The study involved semi-structured interviews with pastors and church leaders from four Presbyterian Church in America churches in the eastern United States. The study revealed that diverse strategies of revitalization reflect the unique mix of gifts and resources that each church possesses, both in its leaders and laypeople. Effective renewal plans are not borrowed from models provided by other churches, but are carefully crafted to fit each unique congregation. The study also revealed the importance of communicating a clear rationale and vision for change but also discerning what kind of change the congregation would most readily embrace. Leaders must possess a unitifed commitment to pursue necessary change but also adapt leadership initiatives and style to fit the congregation. Finally, the study revealed that churches more effectively pursue change when they are aware of their church culture and the opportunities and limitations it represents. The recognition of the dynamics of personality can reveal the most effective pathways to ministry fruitfulness as well as provide insight into pathways that should be avoided."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131470837841920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:48:01.044Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:59:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:52:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"29f8764f-26fa-4155-a50d-839e282c641c","accessControl_ssim":["04d95c20-bdb2-4dd6-a35f-94085124a0af"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["How do your children say 'home'? preaching to deepen koinonia in a multicultural congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:59:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:21:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["db6eb95a-f492-458c-a73f-1235870fb6bf"],"hasLease_ssim":["f9c2b11e-0de2-43da-ab70-29b4f5226d48"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Linda C Loving"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"location_tesim":["United States","Illinois--Chicago"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Barbara H Cathey"],"keyword_tesim":["Preaching, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cultural pluralism","Church history","Presbyterian Church","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis addresses preaching as a tool for inviting a multicultural congregation into deeper koinonia, particularly in times of conflict. The context of this project is a Presbyterian congregation in Chicago which includes African immigrants, African Americans, Euro-Americans, persons with chronic mental illness and those whose quirkiness has avoided medical detection. The author explores how people who are displaced from their cultures and/or families of origin experience the church as 'home'. Through interviewing active members, exploring scripture, reflecting theologically and homiletically, and telling stories of congregational life, the author invites preachers and pastors to release their own predetermined agendas for the multicultural church in order to make space for God to create spiritual home for all people."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127978011262976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:52:30.026Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:27:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:49:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fcc9ca80-bca6-4737-89a5-f99f5f9aa826","accessControl_ssim":["2a81f6b5-57a9-40c1-8feb-d9a043c7ce96"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Grace vs race: grace wins: racial and theological reconciliation observed in the church chartering of Word Centered Fellowship by the Presbytery of Shenango"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:27:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:21:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["690d6c7a-6906-438b-a2d9-d7ec9c8f209e"],"hasLease_ssim":["3421af84-74d3-4dce-aed6-93b7d1d00a8d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Susan L Kendall"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Angel L De La Cruz"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Presbyterianism","Race relations","Word Centered Fellowship (Masury, Ohio)","Pentecostalism--Reformed Church","Presbyterian Church","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Presbytery of Shenango"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author examined the dynamics and dimensions which led the Word Centered Fellowship, a multiethnic, charismatic, independent church, and the Presbytery of Shenango, a predominantly white presbytery, to partner to reach the goal of chartering the Word Centered Fellowship as a Presbyterian church in Shenango Presbytery. The project also proposes some missional attitudes that the Presbyterian Church (USA) should adopt to welcome the brothers and sisters from other ethnicities."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129899666243584,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:02.659Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:10:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:13:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c2d010d1-05a8-41bd-b314-75244720fbea","accessControl_ssim":["5ca4e20c-1b51-4b6d-bfdd-7696568c4798"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Gauging church health and assessing the spirituality of Santee Presbyterian Church by using natural church development"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:10:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:43:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ecca57de-1694-4655-ace8-7ae83135f55c"],"hasLease_ssim":["c85d5d3a-7795-43fc-9771-23ce1ee755a7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stanley P Saunders"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Doubles"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Presbyterian Church","Spiritual life--Christianity--Reformed Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Using Natural Church Development and its resources, we attempted to assess, improve, and evaluate the Spirituality of Santee Presbyterian Church over the year 2006. What would it take for a congregation to experience that type of revitalization? Will a 'transformed' leader produce a 'transformed' church? Can the traditional disciplines of prayer, reading scripture, and experiencing true solitude and true community make a difference in the lives of busy, proud, 'know it all' Christians? I am convinced that significant spiritual transformation is possible in the church today -- and I have already begun to experience it at First Presbyterian Church. The most critical factor so far in transformation for this church has been personal transformation in the life of its pastor. This project attempted to promote spiritual transformation in the church by recognizing and supporting a continued process of transformation in the life of the pastor and by utilizing a family systems approach to change. Major steps included self-awareness and living into the person God has created; living into the particularities of one's giftedness and situation; utilizing long-held spiritual traditions of prayer, solitude, community and spiritual direction; living as a non-anxious presence and recognizing that one individual's change within the system forces the system itself to change. From the written responses of various individuals within and outside of First Presbyterian Church we can conclude that a spirit of transformation is alive in the congregation and in the lives of individuals there, as a result of the spiritual growth of the pastor."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128204858097664,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:56:06.364Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:28:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:59:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"860b6cb4-3156-45cc-9e0e-a6e4425944cb","accessControl_ssim":["7c174d8e-0c96-45ff-b216-f2a490dd1c11"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["When the pastor leaves: a manual for presbytery intervention during the early interim period"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:28:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:04:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5de0f219-98da-4a06-8497-cba4c6db1638"],"hasLease_ssim":["3cf87862-f70f-4d5a-8fcb-559efa61c2f7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Luis R Rivera"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Daniel M Saperstein"],"keyword_tesim":["Congregations--Internal conflict"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Presbyteries","Congregations","Pastoral psychology","Presbyterian Church","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Interim clergy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The 'early interim' period between the departure of a pastor and the arrival of an interim minister is characterized by elevated congregational anxiety, individual and collective grief, and greater reliance on denominational leaders.
