They equate it with the heavy-handed or manipulative tactics of evangelical or fundamentalist Christians whose only goal is to convert others to the Christian faith to avoid hell. Given the prevalence of church trauma and spiritual abuse many have personally and vicariously experienced, theologically progressive college ministries struggle to understand how to faithfully do evangelism. A survey of pastors within Homestead Presbytery regarding their experiences during the psychological evaluation and their perceptions of its utility was completed. Findings indicate a lack of benchmarks to support the usefulness of these evaluations, a potential for harm, and a pervasive lack of understanding regarding its purpose. Recommendations for alternative means of assessing readiness for ordained ministry are presented. A lack of space limits the number of student seats available, while tuition costs restrict access to families able to afford sky-high rates. Meanwhile, childcare teachers are paid low salaries for their services, and children living in poverty fall farther and farther behind. Such a challenge threatens not only a child’s livelihood, but also the congregation’s vision “that all may know God’s love.” This project will examine how the principles of adaptive leadership might reframe the congregation’s missiological understanding and practices via the work of education. Utilizing primarily qualitative methods including ethnographic research and interviews, I tested if spiritual reflections on beauty and awe would lead to a desire for more worship outdoors. Scripture, John Calvin and more modern Reformed thinkers provided the theological underpinnings. Scientific thinking was also drawn upon. It was found worship outdoors may both increase openness to beauty and awe, and increase mental wellbeing. The breadth of possibilities for outdoor worship were considered. Participants individually prayed three groups of Psalms each day for 20 days during Advent 2023, including the Lord’s Prayer. Participants then completed open-ended surveys and discussed the experience in a focus group. In doing so it considers key characteristics revealed by research within the English Anglican tradition and explores those characteristics as understood in Biblical and Reformed theology. For some, the language of “story” brings to mind fantasy epics like The Stormlight Archives. However, stories are also central in religious traditions. While many in the Christian tradition reflect upon the stories of scripture regularly, it is not as common to practice storytelling to enhance our own spirituality. This paper, through qualitative research, examines how the use of story, particularly focusing on its use in a Reformed Eucharistic liturgy, impacts the experiences and imaginations of worshippers. Matthew"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The 175-member Presbyterian congregation I serve has been deeply affected by the pandemic, the changing role of church in culture, and individual and communal losses. This project sought to equip them to begin to identify and name before God their own suffering, and that of others. My research was conducted in the context of a Lenten bible study, a prayer walk, interviews and a survey. Participants also created their own laments.
