Charisma is defined as 'God's grace that motivates and enables Christians to minister in God's power'. Romans 12:3-9 is the only list of 'spiritual gifts' that begins with the technical term Charismata. Distinction is made between 'offices' (Ephesians 4:11-12), 'manifestation of the Spirit' (1 Cor 12:7-11) and Charismata. The hypothesis, 'as Christians learn what their spiritual gift is, they will be freed and equipped for ministry' is supported with surveys and interviews with 21 members of St John's Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. Every portion of the letter is squeezed for every inference that can be drawn as to 1st century cultic practice which can be translated into our contemporary liturgy. Directions, examples, implications, and first principles drawn from the text of 1 Corinthians are conjoined by the author with the contemporary church at worship. He then describes what we may do as contemporary Protestants to recapture something of the New Testament fervor. The findings are: 1) 1 Corinthians is a unity, built around the central theme of the church's need to express its joy in the gospel as it upbuilds itself in love; 2) The great hymns to love (13) and resurrection (15) are not extraneous additions, but central expressions of that underlying message; 3) If we are to rediscover this, it is clear that we must build on that same foundation, to wait for and encourage each other, to make room for great difference of taste and doctrine, and to discover our unity in the resurrection. Decency and order may be the necessary machinery for carrying out the task, but our business is joy, and the rubric is love."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717886879596544,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:25:25.494Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:22:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:02:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0da73a07-d7f3-491e-8584-3ac260d36822","accessControl_ssim":["10f5aadb-09ad-470a-afc6-f2bf18473503"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Evangelical faith and social concern: a case study of the Broadway Presbyterian Church, New York city, 1825-1975"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:22:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:30:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f84e0bad-83ce-4a24-932f-042dd990fc14"],"hasLease_ssim":["3ed43b69-7117-493a-b365-822b66165ab6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald W Shriver"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["J Roger Hull"],"keyword_tesim":["Presbyterian Church--Social teachings"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelicalism","Broadway Presbyterian Church (New York, NY)","Presbyterian Church","Social action"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Broadway Presbyterian Church was originally organized in 1825 as an outgrowth of the Second Great Awakening. This church's often troubled life has been a remarkable microcosm of wider currents in American church history. This study traces these currents from 1825-1975 with particular reference to the relationship between 'evangelical faith' and 'social concern'. Primary documents available are the official records and writings of its ten ministers over 150 years. Personal faith and active social reform characterized many evangelical churches in the 19th century. The fundamentalist-modernist controversy has characterized the 20th century and continues to hamper the unity and mission of the church. While there are new possibilities for reconciliation between 'personal faith' and 'social gospel' among conservative and liberal Christians, particularly with the emergence of the 'new evangelicals' of the 1970s, some issues, especially biblical understanding and authority, indicate continued tensions. Dynamic balance must continue to be the pattern for the Presbyterian church if it is to retain biblical wholeness in mission and insights and contributions of both factions."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716460828819456,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:02:45.505Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:13:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:00:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a62ee51d-bbf4-4e04-896c-b4f60cfa2e97","accessControl_ssim":["a9a3744c-e250-48b9-a277-d0e8a7bc423b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Christian realization through families"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:13:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:57:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4b0938ea-5dd8-4ffe-9543-30215f97b829"],"hasLease_ssim":["84100497-0301-4c46-92e4-f4faae528e4d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Knox College (Toronto, ON)"],"advisor_tesim":["Doris J Dyke"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Alexander S MacDonald"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["Knox College"],"subject_tesim":["St Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Aurora, Ont)","Congregations","Families--Religious life","Presbyterian Church","Church work","Attitude (Psychology)--Religious aspects","Presbyterian Church in Canada","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In this action-research project carried out in the candidate's congregation in the Winter of 1979-80, seven varied types of families develop a model for intergenerational communication and discipleship.
