The project studies four groups within congregational life.  Intervention is primarily in the form of a workshop-seminar for officers and other laity of the church.  The project uses the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument.  One hundred one persons responded to the test instrument.  Several variables serve as means for comparing data with standard analyses. Pastors in three Presbyterian churches lead their elders in field testing of the design.  Participants take pre- and post-tests and provide concluding evaluations which show significant increases in knowledge and understanding of baptism.  Testing the design in churches with the pastors as leaders demonstrates that the program can be used effectively by others. Although they comprise a significant proportion of lay leadership, deacons are frequently underused and appear to flounder.  This project examines this ministry of the deacon and provides specific options for its improvement.  Through the use of surveys and in-depth interviews, the project identifies four pivotal areas where deacons appear to flounder: 1) biblical-historical roots; 2) understanding their role as 'the Body' of Christ; 3) servanthood; 4) purposeful organization.
