(PCUSA). Since the 1960s, mainline denominations' membership has declined. The Presbytery of Memphis, the basic unit studied, participated in the decline of the PCUSA. The dynamic model developed in this dissertation combines the shepherd and servant metaphors to develop a biblical, narrative-driven model for transformational leadership. The answer to this question has its roots in both the Old and New Testaments and is played out for us in the historic development of spirituality from the early Desert Fathers, through the Reformation, and into our present time. The focus of this work is that when these areas of study and discovery are opened the average member's spiritual life benefits and the member experiences a closer relationship with the Lord. Analysis of the issue is based on surveys of those who participated in an eleven week course of study covering the development of spirituality and the disciplines historically associated with spirituality. The focus is on the PC(USA) using the metaphor of the church in exile in American culture.  The research methods include social-theological reflection on the role of the PC(USA) in the current culture, biblical reflection on the proclamations of II Isaiah, and interviews with PC(USA) clergy.  The implication is that clergy are aware of the shifts in American culture, the diminishing role of the church, and the impact upon congregations. Each church has been chartered and has developed strong programs and faithful worshipping communities.  Yet the pastors of these new churches are showing signs of burnout, fatigue, and distorted understandings of their identity and call as servants of Jesus Christ. Utilizing qualitative research with six new church development pastors, this project explores how a Reformed understanding of Sabbath calls into question their theology, and their understanding of rest and time.
