This research attempts to give new ways of searching for the presence of the Holy by exploring the intersection of theology, the faith stories of five congregations in the Presbytery of Arkansas, and the architecture of the building complexes of those congregations. The research employed the method of qualitative analysis to find recurrent themes in the faith stories of the congregations as told by long-time members, analyzing those stories through the lens of Reformed theology, and contrasting those findings with the church's architectural expression of faith. The study found that each congregation expresses its faith in unique ways, both in story form as well as structurally, but that Presbyterians need reinforcement of our verbal vocabulary to articulate how we understand the Holy to be among us as a particularly called people of God. The purpose of these groups was to nurture discernment in the lives of the participants. By 'discernment,' we mean fostering an awareness of God working in our lives. Members of the groups strove to assist each other in paying attention to God. Nine people were trained to be leaders of the groups. Five groups were formed incorporating twenty-seven participants. As part of the project, a spiritual discernment handbook was developed by the author. This project explores the effect of introducing the Celtic understanding of God's presence in the world on the religious and prayer practices of college students. A small group of students met weekly to discuss articles on Celtic spirituality and to review prayers from the Celtic tradition. A pre- and posttest design with no comparison group measured changes in their perception of the presence of God in their lives. They also recorded daily responses to two questions: How have I experienced the presence of God today? and How have I reacted to the presence of God today? These responses were coded using categories suggested by perceived manifestations of God's presence in a person's life: connectedness with God, others, and creation; right relationships; a greater sense of the greatness of God; occurrence of private prayer and corporate worship; acceptance of self and one's gifts; a sense of being led or called; freedom and peace in the midst of crisis or calamity; sacrifice and power in daily life; and, other categories that emerged from the data. This study suggests that the participants experienced the truth communicated in Scripture that God is present in our world and that God's presence is something that can be experienced in a variety of ways and places, chiefly through a sense of connectedness with other persons rather than directly to God or to creation. Furthermore it suggests that being exposed to a different view of God's presence can increase a person's sensitivity to that presence. Participants expressed an appreciation for the Celtic integration of the Christian faith into all aspects of their lives and came to see the reality that all that we do is prayer. However, this awareness did not substantially affect the time and manner in which the participants prayed to God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134249379692544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:32:10.869Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:46:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:45:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2cc5e2c1-7c97-46de-8988-67fab6f0536a","accessControl_ssim":["68bab301-3cfa-4c6a-aacb-ab14e86621a6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Hungering for epiphany: presiding in worship from a reformed perspective"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:46:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:26:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5a7157a7-0a35-42fc-ab3e-c44a4ef207d8"],"hasLease_ssim":["0af36c3c-7efd-4990-80bb-72e8a018feed"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stanley R Hall"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Yme Woensdregt"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Public worship","Presence of God","Theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["People come to worship hungering for an encounter with God in which God is revealed--an epiphany. Presiding well will foster it."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135104881393665,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:45:46.739Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:46:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:41:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a38e57e4-d0ba-46b3-83be-969512249dfa","accessControl_ssim":["c5e8648b-427b-496e-934c-082f38606f5d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Divine presence within crisis and suffering"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:46:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:53:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5342272d-73b1-49b8-b5d6-e0f3707ec8a9"],"hasLease_ssim":["017f1549-43d0-4679-b2ae-3e0ba12618f6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["George H Kehm"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lance L Brown"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Lord's Supper--Real presence","Suffering","Presence of God"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Life questions religion. The human experience of crisis and suffering calls into question the presence and love of God. This project attempts to prepare a congregation for times of crisis and suffering by means of a ministry of preaching, teaching, and celebration of Christ's presence in the Lord's Supper. By utilizing insights from Samuel Terrien's The Elusive Presence, by developing a working process theodicy and an understanding of 'real presence' in the Eucharist, and by a lay group which helped to write liturgies and shape sermon content, a congregation deepened their experience and understanding of God's
