It seemed valuable to design a study which would express the Church's understanding of diocesan priesthood in the teaching of Vatican Council II, and to examine the way in which this was addressed in the policies of St John's field education department and in some representative sites. The project was designed as a qualitative study.  The methodology was that of the participant-observer.  Through the use of disciplined attention to and comparison of settings, persons, actions, events, words and interview material four factors were found to give work satisfaction: dominion, sharing, freedom and vision.
