soldiers to go without the Sacraments for long durations.  The Army Chaplain Corps is only at 33-percent personnel strength in terms of Catholic chaplains. Retaining Army Catholic chaplains has become increasingly important in light of Department of Defense budget cuts; moreover, retention is more cost-effective for the Army than recruitment. There are distinct preacher identities, and these can be determined as an outcome of a preaching survey. Data from a survey conducted among priests established three preacher identities: disciple, entertainer, and teacher. The study examines the formation needs for each identity while exploring pedagogics and methods, and presents a model for forming preachers using identity on the foundation that an understanding of preacher identity can result in better preaching. The need for such a project emerges from both cultural and ecclesial circumstances.  Many are looking for someone to help them to find and to nurture a divine orientation in a disorienting world.  They look for someone to help them uncover and articulate the longings and stirrings of grace within them.  This spiritual awakening has urged many parish clergy to seek assistance in the practice of spiritual direction.  An important component of the project is the exploration of the common boundary between spiritual direction and pastoral counseling. The sample is 89 Jesuit priests who complete a demographic data sheet, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and a Sources of Stress in Ministry Questionnaire.  Forty-three are from the rural group (experimental) and 46 are from the urban group (control).  The study tests three major research hypotheses by using the two tailed t-test for independent samples.  It finds that rural Jesuits are more emotionally exhausted and experience a greater sense of depersonalization than urban Jesuits.  There is little difference between the groups on personal accomplishment, physical symptoms, and days of illness. Rural Jesuits score higher on the critical items cluster of the Sources of Stress Indicator. The project demonstrated the need for continuing liturgical formation among Roman Catholic clergy.
