The author used library research, interviewed women preachers, drew on her own experience as preacher and teacher of preachers, and team taught a course on women and preaching.  She concludes that teachers of women preachers can be most effective when they take into account the unique ways that women grow and learn. The training consisted of a weekend prayer retreat and a ten-week support group.  Each participant took the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and learned about their psychological type. Participants then learned four different types of prayer as taught in Prayer and Temperament: Different Prayer Forms of Different Personality Types by Chester P Michael and Marie C Norrisey. Self-in-relation theory and male spirituality informed the group work, in which participants--through mutual support, personal sharing, and the use of imagination through stories and poems--sought to heal the woundedness of absent or abusive fathers, deal with dynamics of shame, anger and grief, and explore models of power inherent in connection and disconnection. The program consisted of eight two-hour sessions, meeting one evening each week.  The author believed that by exposing women to women in the Scriptures through the lens of the work of women scholars, the women's self-esteem would be enhanced. The Hudson Index of Self-Esteem was the measure of the women's esteem.  A baseline test was given followed by the test taken at the end of each session. Twenty-six clients of 4 pastoral Gestalt therapists and 26 clients of 5 non-pastoral Gestalt therapists were compared using both quantitative and qualitative methodology.  The findings revealed that clients name God as a significant part of their life.  This naming by the clients indicates that those engaged in Gestalt therapy can articulate having a spiritual awakening and/or religious experience while in therapy.  The naming was more explicit with a pastoral Gestalt therapist. The basic approach was inductive.  The method of studying men was through personal narrative, story and observation.  The family, the culture and the church affect the way men perceive themselves as males.  The most important influence are other men, especially fathers.  When these relationships are perceived as negative, men experience personal, sexual and spiritual fragmentation. This dissertation examines the psycho-social aspects of grief and healing, the value of telling one's story in that process, and a study of Job and Psalms 112, 88, and 30 as theological commentary to the journey of grief and healing. The result is a grief workshop design, with comments by three evaluators. The study briefly reviews the historical roots of unconscious material, gives a short overview of the use of unconscious material within the spirituality of Roman Catholicism, and shows through the use of image material recorded during directed retreats how biblical imagery can be a catalyst for raising unconscious material to consciousness.  The results of this study illustrate the effectiveness of biblical imagery as an agent of integration. It draws on both psychodynamic and systems theories because of the combined need for both individual and relational growth. Methods include a literature review, anthropological and cross-cultural analysis, and discussion of case material.
