The study demonstrates the critical issues for this population in the developmental period of young adulthood and implications for ministry with them.  The four issues and concerns that arise from the research are: the meaning of success, maintaining the balance of career and family, valuing connection in relationships and applying faith to business ethics. It documents an action in ministry consisting of a series of ten experimental sermons which were intended to be therapeutic for listeners.  These sermons began with the ten 'irrational beliefs' from Albert Ellis' rational-emotive therapy, and reframed common psychological problems in terms of the Christian gospel. Undergirding this project are the psychological studies showing that children's representations of God are usually formed from internalized images of parents; these early images of God usually remain influential in a person's life.  The research was conducted by means of individual interviews with both oral questions and printed word-pairs regarding the participants' parents and their current and childhood God-images.  The data showed that the survivors' God-images generally did have characteristics similar to mothers.  The data also showed that generally the more severe the incest and the earlier the onset, the more negative the God-image of the survivor. A methodology of in-depth interviews with three 'post-anorexic' (physically recovered) women was the foundation of this qualitative study.  A coding table linking shame, female identity, and the mother-daughter relationship allowed for quantification of the data. The results indicated deep shame around female identity, although the anorexia appeared more an effort to break free from a shame-bound self than a symbol of it. The methodology incorporated a two-item questionnaire, modified case studies, and follow-up interviews with four of the twenty-five participants.  The five categories from Women's Ways of Knowing by Belenky, et al, asessed each woman's level of individuation and differentiation. Four categories of brokenness--divisiveness, arrogance, idolatry, and hardness of heart--gleaned through exegesis of Paul's letters to the Corinthians and the Ephesians are explored.  Five ways of knowing for women--'silence,' as well as 'received,' 'procedural,' 'subjective,' and 'constructivist' knowing--attributed to Mary Belenky and her research group are considered.  The methodology of the praxis circle, including the movements of formation, event, self-interest, theological assumptions, social science assumptions, and new praxis, is employed.  Ten stories based on interviews are presented. The concept of the soul and after-death experience are traced from Greek philosophy through the writings of the patristic Fathers of the Church and into the depth psychologies of Sigmund Freud and Carl G Jung.  Case studies of near-death experiences are examined in the light of Eastern Orthodoxy.  Modern Judaeo-Christian concepts of the soul and its immortality are examined. The paper also offers specific practical suggestions for working with victims and survivors. The author has used her own experience of victimization and the experiences of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse as a way of presenting the issues involved.  The biblical record is explored, looking first at the roots of violence evident in Scripture and, also, the seeds of hope contained therein. The thesis documents the breakthrough experience in the lives of these women as they name the causes and consequences of their growing feminist self-awareness and the relationship of their self-awareness to their own spiritual journey.  The theory of Bernard Lonergan's self-appropriation of the human subject undergirds this study.  This theoretical framework shapes the process of theological reflection used with the women and sets the scene for an understanding of emerging consciousness in women that is liberating.  A feminist methodology is employed which situates the research in the experience of the researcher.  The findings of this study confirm that there is an emerging feminist consciousness among Catholic women which needs to be nurtured by conscientized and sensitive ministers. This study looks at the effects upon men of the absence of fathers and mentoring men, men's dependency upon women to meet emotional needs and men's difficulties in separating developmentally from mothers.  The work of Robert Bly, the masculine archetypes of Robert Moore and the spirituality/sexuality of James Nelson are addressed.  Two stories enjoying currency for their illustrating landmarks to mature masculinity are included.  Case studies are from the author's pastoral psychotherapeutic practice.
