The small number of pastors participating in this effort limits the strength with which conclusions can be stated. This project produced a preliminary indication that a particular style of isolated ministry is associated with low referral activity on the part of clergymen, and that this style can be altered by a carefully-constructed, brief educational experience. The writer hopes that further study, by himself or other researchers, will contribute additional data to these findings. There are two issues which are essentials to this project but which are not discussed in the report. These should be identified at the outset. The first of these issues is the writer’s assumption that Christian commitment and psychological insights are not, by nature, antagonistic to one another. On the contrary, I begin with a belief that an appropriate use of psychological concepts can enrich pastoral ministry. The material discussed in this report will be of little interest to those who do not share this presupposition. The second issue is the use of masculine pronouns in this report to describe those who practice pastoral ministry. All those persons who were in the original research sample were male and references to these, in the interest of accuracy, are in the masculine gender. An effort was made early in the writing to shift to a more inclusive form when referring to pastors beyond this research group. The result of that effort was both awkward and confusing. Thus, masculine pronouns, despite their limitation, have been used throughout this report in referring to members of the The exploration includes a contextual analysis, literature review, biblical reflection, and the author’s personal reflection on lived experiences that led to a servant-leader philosophy of Christian leadership. The analysis informed the design and implementation of a field research project: Training Ministry Leaders Towards Supportive Psychotherapy Referrals to Tyndale Wellness Centre. The project addressed an identified need to help Christian ministry leaders learn how to support their members with mental health problems and refer them for psychotherapy. A training program was developed and piloted with nine ministry leaders and the outcomes analyzed. Findings indicated an overall increase in participants’ understanding of mental health, the importance of self-care, the nature of spiritually integrated psychotherapy and how to make supportive referrals. A recurrent theme in the research analysis was participants’ concern about clergy mental health as much as that of their members. It arose from the author’s reflection on her own spiritual journey, from her professional experience as a psychotherapist, and from the observation that psychological barriers often impede spiritual progress. While the psychotherapeutic and spirituality literature often exist in separate silos, and the two professions tend to operate in different domains, the author contends that spiritual formation/direction and psychotherapy in combination are often what is needed to bring about Christlikeness. A psychospiritual model of Christian formation is presented that integrates insights from both domains with particular attention to the rich spiritual traditions of Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic understandings of psychological wholeness and spiritual holiness. To test this integrated model, a field research project was carried out to explore the effect of an integrated, eight-session psychoeducational program with individuals whose spiritual lives were affected by trauma and unforgiveness. The findings of the study suggest that attachment theory and trauma-informed principles may help people move forward in the process of forgiveness and spiritual growth. This research has been motivated by the level of stress and its consequences of emotional situations that the COVID-19 pandemic has promoted.As a result, an educational conference was held on Saturday, March 20, 2021, under the theme: 'Leaders in Christ, Anxiety, Post-traumatic Stress, and Depression'. This Conference was held in one of the church facilities where 38 pastors participated. The model uses the modern therapeutic technique of Dr. David Grove in conjunction with the biblical psalms of lament.David Grove maintains that people use metaphors to describe past traumatic experiences, and that these metaphors provide the key for healing these wounds, or the 'wounded child within,' in the past where they first occurred. Grove's therapeutic process emphasizes careful attention to the office setting, healing the wounded child within in the past, allowing the client's use of metaphor to express the trauma, and strict regard to the 'clean' language used by the therapist. Grove also contends that the wounded child within is 'frozen' in time, and the therapist must help guide the client through and beyond that experience so that healing may occur.
