The author examined the literature on shamanism and studied the theological literature on contextualization. This thesis discusses the universal problem of nominalism and offers a plan to reduce the high proportion of nominal Christians through the introduction of a specialized training program for pastors which concentrates on nurturing and discipling new converts to the point where they become self-motivating.  The author highlights anthropological and historical factors which have contributed to the problem of nominalism. Even though the Bible does not directly address the question of the ancestor practices, the Scriptures do give guidance to the church of Jesus Christ in dealing with the problems associated with these rites.  The author exegetes passages in the Bible which are relevant to the subject of the ancestor practices and from his exegesis constructs a theology which speaks to major issues faced by Chinese Christians today.
