Borgmann believes the most concrete expression of technology is the device that delivers a commodity with minimal involvement in the processes that create that commodity. Consumers in a technological culture default to a 'device paradigm' that shapes their worldview and drives them to commoditize focal realities and sacred things. People expect to enjoy thick spiritual experiences without participating in the processes that create and cultivate such experiences. The author suggests strategies to temper the device paradigm in American evangelical churches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["910240dd-6bfb-49cb-ab06-1b8de036aac8"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132134714376192,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:58:34.166Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:18:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:57:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5a39fb3a-56fa-4fbb-9c9a-46ecbddda3d8","accessControl_ssim":["726c310b-35bc-467a-afd9-4112be8402b6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Chinese diaspora in Africa: a pre-evangelistic ethnography of the Chinese diaspora in 21st century Africa"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:18:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:46:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ae31e4ea-a125-4fb5-9ec3-1d95b5551237"],"hasLease_ssim":["b674b7a1-e883-4911-a1cf-3a4202f67de6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John Branner"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"location_tesim":["China","Africa"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lih-Chenh Chen"],"keyword_tesim":["Diaspora"],"publisher_tesim":["Western Seminary (Portland, OR)"],"subject_tesim":["Anthropology","Religion","Chinese","Christians"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Chinese diaspora in Africa: a pre-evangelistic ethnography of the Chinese diaspora in twenty-first century Africa"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this dissertation is to understand the worldview, attitudes, and beliefs of the Chinese diaspora in Africa in in the 21st century. The thesis asks if it makes any difference to the work of the psychotherapists that they have a religious foundation. The results demonstrated a distrust of expressing an overt Catholic identity, as well as highlighting Northern Ireland to be more post-modern in its culture as it is post-conflict. Pastoral recommendations are made to help the centers reclaim their Catholic identity and mission following an engagement with church tradition and Irish culture."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129141913845760,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:11:00.010Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:34:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"da6d36e1-6fd4-4263-b3f8-534f15904336","accessControl_ssim":["22b0b659-489b-4194-b0ca-ea53014a6321"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A collaborative model for the church leading a faith-based public-private partnership to reduce health disparities in underserved communities"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:34:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:22:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a65092d2-fbaf-4cca-a86f-92def8dfc838"],"hasLease_ssim":["5e8f60d1-4d68-495b-9e41-73118bf5d893"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Harold A Hudson","Daryl R Hairston"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph E Jones"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Medical care","Health","Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (Georgetown, SC)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The context for this research project is Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Georgetown, South Carolina. Qualitative research was conducted to assess needs and measure project effectiveness, using surveys and interviews. This effort increased health education, outreach, awareness, and identified support resources within the community.
