Not only is there ongoing confusion about the concept of the kingdom of God, but pastors also proclaim the gospel of the kingdom of God in a culture awash in pluralism.\r\n\r\n Using a basic qualitative research design, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with multiple pastors experienced in preaching the kingdom of God. The interviews focused on gaining data with four research questions: 1) how do pastors describe the kingdom of God is at hand, 2) what challenges do pastors face, 3) what strategies do pastors use, and 4) what outcomes do pastors desire when proclaiming the kingdom of God is at hand to congregations living in pluralistic societies?\r\n\r\n The literature review focused on three key areas to gain a broader understanding proclaiming the kingdom of God is at hand in a pluralistic society: the meaning of Jesus’s proclamation in Mark 1:15, the relationship between the church and the kingdom of God, and the practices of preachers who proclaim the gospel of the kingdom in a pluralistic society.\r\n\r\n This study concluded that greater clarity is needed for pastors who proclaim the kingdom of God is at hand in pluralistic societies. To provide this clarity, this study identified several key components and practices for pastors, including, defining the kingdom of God in the abstract, regularly preaching the kingship of Jesus, humbly addressing kingdom misunderstandings, helping people imagine the kingdom, remembering repentance, and desperate dependence on the Holy Spirit.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2023/Whitley_Jonathan_DMin_2023.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1817733932566708224,"timestamp":"2024-12-06T23:02:45.549Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-13T19:53:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:37:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ccafe066-b4e3-4369-99a3-b84125b29f67","accessControl_ssim":["c7aa34a3-3069-461d-afb7-96f773b8e2fb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Dialogue in the local church responding creatively to religious pluralism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-13T19:53:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:00:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["71585561-d504-4229-89e6-5900abb5444c"],"hasLease_ssim":["1d99edd8-3e4a-4267-81f9-deb47b1b9d73"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Margaret Oleson"],"publisher_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religious pluralism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["None"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["2ed862c2-32c4-448b-95c8-4a58c3d74b5b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134617952059392,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:38:02.367Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:59:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:19:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"341456c9-fd23-4b6e-ba4a-526e66b2dffb","accessControl_ssim":["f636efb1-2b3c-4f39-82a3-232ce55faf36"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Using appreciative inquiry and focused sermons to move congregational members of Cedarview Church in Paris, Ontario to develop friendships with non-Christian neighbours"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:59:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:38:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["94205588-0f31-463e-9731-7c1ea1d5996b"],"hasLease_ssim":["37cf5f60-e7d3-40e4-afcc-1e05beb90fdf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["David Russel"],"year_tesim":["2015"],"location_tesim":["Ontario"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Tonn Gerhold"],"publisher_tesim":["Tyndale University College and Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Religious pluralism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Cedarview Church congregation (Paris, Ontario) was actively engaged and enthusiastic in regards to community ministries. This paper is the report of a study using action research involving teenage members of a suburban Chicago church in a survey and small group reflections on their attitudes towards other faiths and their understanding of religious difference. The results show that tolerant views held by these young people owe more to secular expediency than religious commitment. Beliefs are private and rarely shared, even among close friends. The author suggests ways the church may help youth live faithfully in a world of many faiths."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129823299502080,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:21:49.830Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:01:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:57:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"39821b10-27c9-4e1f-a532-fdfc476187aa","accessControl_ssim":["b400a3a7-cfc0-46f1-8a15-65e4c5e7d069"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Confirming Christian confidels: faith formation in a pluralistic world"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:01:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:48:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0eebfc60-9af9-44e9-b88f-1333865b783f"],"hasLease_ssim":["9a4b003c-d5f2-44c1-91b3-d7ad4e3a49ec"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jane I Smith"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Douglas R Norell"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Abrahamic religions","Church work","Religious pluralism","Christian education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores whether teaching with the 'Abrahamic lens' and 'deep religious pluralism' promotes coexistence while nurturing Christian faith. The Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam together provide a lens for transforming Christian education. The frame of deep pluralism reinforces both openness and faithfulness. Congregants become 'confirmed' (strengthened together) as Christian 'confidels' (with faith) as they faithfully emulate Christ's incorporative love and appreciate other traditions. This social upheaval has taken place for many reasons, not the least of which is religious plurality. Individual Christians and Christian institutions are now faced with the question, 'How shall I engage the religious other?' As an institution, the Presbyterian Church (USA) is no exception. Using biblical and theological resources, as well as a diverse, five-person panel of Presbyterian Church (USA) clergy, this documents to determine the theology of non-Christian religions.
