This project studies the factors involved in the healing process of victims of spiritual abuse as well as ideas from systems theory as to what factors contribute to an abusive, toxic church. The author uses a qualitative research approach and utilizes the tools of a questionnaire and interviews with nine victims of spiritual abuse in Southern Baptist churches. The book of consolation in Isaiah is used as a biblical base for understanding a theology of hope and healing from oppressive circumstances. One outcome of this study is a change model entitled 'The process of healing from spiritual abuse' which involves the phases of oppression, transition, and restoration. The study concludes that resiliency is the outcome of healing. A person who heals will rebound with new vitality and depth in their relationship with the Lord."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132379519123456,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:02:27.631Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:50:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:46:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"49434fae-b65c-4277-a17c-9372cb90fcfd","accessControl_ssim":["2016133e-3c28-4a0b-8d06-c5be0fb23f0b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Hurricane Katrina: scarred by tragedy / disaster / crisis / challenge, renewed by hope"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:50:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:16:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9c7ee11b-cc79-43fc-8c6b-427f9ea30ad6"],"hasLease_ssim":["c5aadd74-1ef5-4b93-b4d3-164a0173c426"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Josiah U Young"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. My hypothesis was that faith in God makes a difference in one's ability to be resilient, to spring back from adversity. I explored resiliency variables including childhood experiences, role models, personality traits, and different understandings of God. The diverse research identified numerous resiliency elements that were helpful to some and not to others. Consequently, each person had personal and unique resources for resiliency. My analysis resulted in the recognition of the importance of caring relationships.
