They remain in use today. This thesis-project argues that the changing ecology of communication demands that Salvation Army preachers adapt to the current communications environment. The theology and praxis of revivalism remain malleable enough to serve the present age, and the grace reflected in the Army's social work outreach is easily understood, but a style of preaching stuck in Victorian rhetorical convention is ineffective. This thesis-project surveys the history of preaching within the Salvation Army and alternative ways to portray Scripture to listeners attuned to the electronic post-everything age. Research elicited feed forward and feed back survey responses from a congregation to whom a Salvation Army minister delivered sermons in modern style. While pastors try their best to arouse interest in their hearers, their training has not prepared them to be interesting.  Seminary has laid a foundation of how to be accurate to a text, clear to one main point, relevant to people's needs, but as predictable as the want ads.  They have been trained one way to preach.  As a result, their sermons are predictable.  Each sermon looks alike in sermon design and in sermon delivery. Conversely, an effectively managed pastoral persona can actually aid in the communication of a message.  This project explores the issue and offers strategies for effectively managing pastoral persona.  The project surveys scholarship on the subject of rhetoric, a study of celebrity preachers, and the results of two focus groups held to explore issues of pastoral persona with mid career pastors and with seminary students. Specifically, this research sought to confirm the hypothesis that the essential principles of visual communication--rhythm, contrast, balance, proportion and unity--are applicable to verbal communication as well.  The research first surveys relevant literature in fields of visual and verbal communication and then noted the principles within the biblical text.  From this review, an evaluation instrument was designed.  Then, three preachers were selected and their sermons transcribed and evaluated according to a validation grid. However, the author discovered that switching to a method geared to predominantly postmodern hearers can leave more traditional hearers feeling 'left behind.' Over the sermons in this project he explored postmodern preaching methods, but also checked in with more traditional hearers. Data was gathered by survey and interviews in a group setting. For small churches, there are ways that we can preach to new generations so that none are 'lost' or 'left behind.' This thesis discusses variety in preaching styles as a way to be inclusive for all those worshiping in smaller congregations. The objective was determined through the development of a sermon evaluation form based on a Likert scale.  The project measured six sermons for correlating and disproportion.
