This project challenges two assumptions as the church seeks to respond: (1) there is a formula for success in multi-ethnic ministry, and (2) small churches are not likely to be successful. This project is an anthropological narrative of a small, rural Anglo United Methodist Church in Tennessee that initiated and sustained an effective multi-ethnic ministry with Hispanics. The tension between the church as a movement and as an institution will be explored. Long-term residents with rural culture and values are being invaded by newcomers from urban and suburban areas with differing culture and values. This change of city dwellers in the country is brinigng about change because of a clash of lifestyle and values. The strong emotions hinder the ability of the established traditional church in reaching these newcomers. This dissertation is designed to help church leaders of the established traditional church in the post-rural environment lead effective transformation.
