An understanding of congregational conflict is sought in the small church set in the rural (town and country) community. Ten principles are identified for cultivating the preacher's spiritual health so they are prepared to preach. Sixteen principles are identified for sculpting the preacher's message to manage conflict from the pulpit. With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. The author presents historical and Wesleyan theological foundations that offer validity for the import and perseverance of such churches.  Instruments based on the interaction of biblical narrative, church history, and personal spirituality were designed to advance the spiritual growth of a core study group.  The congregation explored methods of reframing their story through historical reflection of past narrative events, faith visioning for the future and community building through creativity and play.
