This methodology was entered into after all other possibilities were deemed unsuitable.  It is a pattern of using a regular rotation of lay speakers and has lasted for four years. Utilizing guidelines of clear, shared vision for ministry developed for this project, judicatory officials recommended target churches for participation.  Leadership from each congregation completed three research instruments. Results were used to establish a positive correlation between vision for ministry and the presence of higher morale, a future orientation and a higher level of concern for those outside the local church. By using the accumulated knowledge and experience of participants and the writings of rural sociologists, several key issues were identified during this three-day workshop and solutions were established collectively. Pastors of small, rural churches have a complex of frustrations or difficulties which make their ministry more difficult than larger church pastors.  These factors include finances, leadership conflicts, background differences between pastor and spouse and the current church/community he serves, isolation, lack of denominational support, size (of the church he pastors), loss of specific calling, and lack of support from literature to address his demographic setting. At the extremes of the survey sample one could see evident differences in the frustration they faced.  Finances, leadership conflicts, lack of denominational support, and loss of calling all affected the smallest pastors, while these were not such a frustration to larger church pastors. In addition, the rural pastor did have some differences in the way he responded to the survey, though the results were not conclusive. The author, therefore, sought for healthy models among growing churches in such settings and studied their common characteristics. Twenty-one possible growth dynamics were identified and eleven churches were studied to ascertain which of these dynamics were common to them and to what degree they might account for growth. Fifteen characteristics were found to contribute to the growth of churches and nine of these emerged as significant. Four main studies were included: the study of prayer's impact upon family evangelism; the effectiveness of having a 'family ties' sermon series and a family outreach Sunday; a look at some barriers to rural evangelism; and the effectiveness of specific training in household evangelism through a retreat format. Many academic-cosmopolitan ministers are unaware of the positive presence and contributions of 'local folks' in rural churches.  Only about two to ten perecent of USA adults are 'academic-cosmopolitans.' The author's research, interviews and personal experience suggest that academic pastors often do not relate well to locals who may be up to sixty percent of the USA adult population. A participatory, field research method was employed in the implementation of this project.  Conclusions were that this model has the potential for reproducibility not only in the rural areas of Korea, but in the urban districts as well.
