An understanding of congregational conflict is sought in the small church set in the rural (town and country) community. Ten principles are identified for cultivating the preacher's spiritual health so they are prepared to preach. Sixteen principles are identified for sculpting the preacher's message to manage conflict from the pulpit. The project involves working with curriculum action research embedded within one-day ministry discernment events for laity. Measurement tools include a spiritual gift inventory, repeated measures Likert questionnaires, a short-term photovoice exercise, and semi-structured interviews. Smithfield Baptist Church located in Gloucester, Virginia served as the context for this project. The researcher hypothesized that the freedom of worship and the availability of relevant ministry opportunities would provoke an attitudinal change in the current parishioner, as well as increase church participation and growth. A mixed methodological approach was used to measure the project's effectiveness including focus groups, pre and post survey questionnaires, workshop questionnaires, and workshop evaluations. This thesis examined specific issues dealing with the use of telemental health in pastoral counseling. From this research two conclusions can be drawn. The forty-two Minnesota town and country churches in the study group are technologically ready for telemental health; however, the human aspect of using telemental health is lagging behind the technology. Socio-cultural misunderstanding hampers relational harmony and ministry effectiveness in affected churches. In response to this problem, the researcher surveyed rurban leaders in three geographic regions of the United States, identified the major recurrent components of the rurban collision, and made recommendations to church leaders concerning how to effectively lead in the presence of rurban socio-cultural tension. Throughout the Scriptures and the history of the Christian church, God has revealed his heart for rural people and places. The purpose of this praxis was to encourage and equip pastors for effective rural ministry through biblical, historical, and practical reflection. A group of eight rural pastors participated in a series of four one-hour workshops and a one-hour discussion session. The director was able to assess the value of the praxis through questionnaires and a discussion forum. With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching.
