It was found that 86 percent of the respondents engaged in formal pastoral counseling; they engaged in counseling an average of 10 hours per month, and they encountered a limited variety of counseling problems. Congregational and community context and job-related institutional characteristics accounted for differences in both the amount and variety of counseling more than did clergy's personal characteristics. Confirmation can introduce youth to systematic theology/ecclesiology and be an initiatory vehicle into adult faith and service.  Resources are limited in rural settings, so this project tried to expand limits while remaining pragmatic.  The author, drawing upon his own experience in rural churches and from a broad range of sources, developed a 12-week course (God and Friends) which aims to be a concise, simple-to-use, yet comprehensive 'primer' on Christian doctrine and practice.
