The assumption of this study was that pastors and congregants in rural ministry need to engage their communities with the gospel. This requires the use of the theology of mission. It was assumed that missional theology would prove to be a helpful tool in aiding pastors and congregants in rural ministry contexts to engage their communities redemptively. \r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structed interviews with four pastors who have experience in rural ministry. The interviews revealed seven challenges common to rural ministry: limited resources, lack of pastoral leadership, oversaturation of churches, congregations struggle when the community struggles, defining the role of the congregation in the community, confusion over theological language, and defining the role of the congregation members in evangelism and outreach.\r\n\r\nThe literature review and analysis of the four interviews focused on how the theology of mission can help inform and equip pastors of rural congregations to engage their communities with the gospel.\r\n\r\nThis study concluded that rural pastors often feel isolated and ignored. It also concluded that rural ministry is an area that needs attention from the wider church. Rural ministry is often over-looked, and this results in large areas of the United States being unreached by the gospel. If the church wants to remain faithful to the commands of Jesus Christ, the church must go intentionally to rural, suburban, and urban contexts to make disciples. To address these challenges, this study identified practices that should be implemented by rural pastors, congregation members, seminaries, and denominations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2023/Shafer_Travis_DMin_2023.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1817733528239996928,"timestamp":"2024-12-06T22:56:19.952Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-05-18T13:31:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-21T00:18:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"34df2c47-f42c-42b5-bc78-fb72a972af61","accessControl_ssim":["b8ec45e5-dff7-41a5-8d35-bd8ba0228a00"],"depositor_ssim":["mtipton@pts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["mtipton@pts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Walking the Way Together: Rural Clergy Discipleship in Community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-05-18T13:30:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-21T00:18:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e2119029-fd3d-44d9-a220-6097a735cc39"],"hasLease_ssim":["3a135685-eaa4-4616-819c-ede349df7c3c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A three-phase process was required to train the small group. The first phase involved allowing a few young adults to discuss the implication of an assigned Bible passage through the inductive Bible study method. The second phase involved training them to preach; the third phase allowed them to preach. For this portfolio, only the first phase was examined. The participants’ involvement included choosing four Bible passages to develop into four sermons. This portfolio has V chapters. Chapter I is the introduction, which gives a general overview of the portfolio while chapter II focuses on the researcher’s personal journey and ministry context. Chapter III is about the author’s philosophy of leadership, which governed and guided his ministry practice; chapter IV examines the field research; and chapter V is the conclusion and implication. The data collection methods used for this research were reflective journaling, participant observation and a survey. While there were things that could have been done differently in the research for a more effective outcome, the project’s conclusion revealed that the young adults’ confidence was increased through their contributions in the group collaboration."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133756839428096,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:21.145Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:05:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:52:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ad19e199-b4cd-44a4-a390-674dd817aab8","accessControl_ssim":["8dbe711e-833a-4f74-be14-7903ebd4cca5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Catholic evangelization in mission communities in rural Appalachia : Reflections on personal and Glenmary experiences"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:05:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:46:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dce7e77c-1c92-4a7a-b188-bf57382e4183"],"hasLease_ssim":["13309685-6901-40e4-928e-b82568b728b9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The report begins with an historical perspective of evangelization followed by a Catholic and Protestant perspective and the difference between these views. Glenmary's fifty-two years experience and contribution to evangelization are reviewed. Three case studies of rural missionology show the diverse approaches of Catholic evangelization in Appalachia. The Virginia study is a Base Christian Community model. The Kentucky study is a Parish Team model, and the Tennessee model demonstrates a Community Development approach. The last chapter covers general reflections on evangelization and some recommendations for new ministers coming to Appalachia. For over fifty years, the Glenmary Society has challenged its members to evangelize the rural Appalachian population of over twenty million people. At present, over one hundred professed Glenmary members minister to 1.25 million people in thirty-five base parishes and thirty-seven mission stations. Some outsiders look up to Glenmary as 'experts' in this ministry. They think we have the experience, knowledge, and success stories to teach others how to be successful missioners in Appalachia and the Deep South. But, the truth is that we are still groping for answers. The major findings were that Appalachia is a difficult place to do Catholic evangelization because of its unique cultural heritage, religious tradition, and depressing poverty. The area is highly unchurched. Glenmary mission parishes average about one-half of one percent (0.5%). Sometimes there is prejudice against the Catholic Church because its tradition differs greatly from the predominate Protestant churches in the area."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/dissertations-theses/catholic-evangelization-mission-communities-rural/docview/304075252/se-2"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873258512580608,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:52:43.883Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:05:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:52:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3d89ef44-6d72-4ffa-9ec0-638a28bc1a97","accessControl_ssim":["99bedc02-902b-4eec-a479-0dbdd118c4b4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Connectional spirituality : small church pastors and the future of the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:05:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:46:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["df48b91f-479b-4b72-ae47-f6efcebde4ef"],"hasLease_ssim":["dcdc2667-8ffc-41a7-b996-728dde84aecf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It is my goal to examine their spiritual lives by looking at the way they influence their congregations to live as followers of Christ. In addition, it is my contention that by engaging a deep practice of spiritual discipline a pastor's call is clarified and guided by the Holy Spirit into ways that produce a type of living that I am calling 'connectional spirituality.' To do this the project utilizes a review of relevant literature and past trends of thought, interviews with fifteen small church pastors serving the Susquehanna Conference of The United Methodist Church and my personal experience as a small church pastor and spiritual director of small church pastors. This study finds that pastors who engage regularly in spiritual practices find themselves leading their congregation to act as a type of mission outpost in their community. Through the interviews, I discovered that the more engaged a pastor was with spiritual practices; the more likely they were to lead in ways that lifted up those in the community surrounding the church as the ones God calls them to serve. This seems to be one very significant way in which small churches can be revitalized and become passionate, vital communities of Christ. Through this, I was led to explore the importance of being a missional church and the ways that this type of connectional spirituality grows from both spiritual practice and being formed in the image of Christ, leading pastors and churches to embody connectedness in their community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["http://archive.lancasterseminary.edu/items/show/385"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873260846710784,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:52:46.109Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:52:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:33:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3824226b-0dc9-489f-a48c-9655673f0e19","accessControl_ssim":["560ca817-3bde-4418-903c-323ac1df6446"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Finding New Opportunities In Christian Community Through The Use Of Technology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:52:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:45:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fad762a9-0332-4472-a5a5-69154c14e985"],"hasLease_ssim":["6cbdc679-1641-4755-b5f1-e9fe5e467d03"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Parish Risk Focus"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James Durlesser Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"location_tesim":["Pennsylvania"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Research has shown that with the rise of post-denominationalism, there is a loss of identity in Baptist churches. This study explores the effects of dropping the name Baptist from a church’s title and its perceived impact on the theological identity of the church. This study includes a literature review analyzing the current body of literature on Baptist identity. Six Converge North Central Baptist churches were studied, three with a Baptist name and three without, using church surveys and interviews with church leaders to determine what theological differences exist between the two categories. The results of the study showed theological differences between the two categories; however, further research, including a quantitative analysis of Baptist churches spanning a broader region of the United States, would be helpful in determining catalysts for Baptist churches dropping the Baptist name."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://spark.bethel.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1295\u0026context=etd"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716837428035584,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:08:44.659Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":91,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
