Its epicenter is sub-Saharan Africa.  This project looks at the response of one faith-based organization, SIM International, with its strategy 'HOPE for AIDS'.  The author uses qualitative research methodology and theological reflection to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of SIM's response.  Lessons learned: the importance of strategic partnerships; affirmation of those involved; engaging membership at all levels; reflection on best practices; analysis of needs and possible responses; perseverance. The program's goal is to shepherd and equip newcomers in their cultural adjustment.  Surveys, orientation programs, and books provided the resources.  Five cross-cultural training principles provided the structure.  The exit phase stresses skills required for a cross-cultural ministry.  The entry phase equips the newcomers to adjust to their new environment and to achieve communicative competence. Methods and measurable results are included in the project. SIM International directed each area to revise its orientation program and state measurable objectives. The two missions are examined form both an historical and a pragmatic perspective.  The purpose of the study is to pinpoint the salient principles that have gone into the development of SIM and EMS and to see what can be done to enhance the missionary outreach of both organizations.  The symbiosis between the two societies is evident in the achievement of the basic goals of outreach to the Hausa people of Nigeria.
