This transformation can take place even though a person's background has been challenging. This work was born out of the writer's desire to meet the cry of the empty human heart. In this work the question of the church's role in spiritual formation will be examined and it will be evidenced that the church of today has come up short and must re-examine where they are in their own process of spiritual growth. The writer explores attitudes and mind sets that churches fall into that can inhibit parishioners in their journey toward transformation. The case studies in this work have been designed to be user-friendly with both individuals and groups. The research described the inherent hazards of working within this ministry. A quantitative survey was sent to every officer serving in the Southern Territory to understand their felt needs. The research showed that children, emotional problems, and administrative expectations were at the top felt needs. The results also demonstrated that officers were hesitant to reach out to the administration because of fear of negative consequences. The research led to the development of integrated wellness training and an integrated clergy self-care plan that was tested on a target group of Salvation Army officers in the Arkansas-Oklahoma division. This study presents a compelling argument that optimum wellness hinges on the balance and integration of body, mind, and spirit. It demonstrated that pastoral care must flow out of the minister's self-care, and that the minister's own degree of wholeness profoundly impacts the integrity of ministry to others.  Integrative wellness retreats were conducted as a key aspect of this thesis project. It has been demonstrated through comparative analysis of pre- and post-test survey data that the teaching that was conducted and integrated clergy self-care plans that were developed positively modified the behaviors of participating officers. In order to accomplish this task, the author interviewed German field officers. Three concerns were expressed. First, current ministry priorities are unsatisfying for the majority of officers. Second, the officers long to invest more of their time in spiritual formation. Third, the officers perceive that the THQs priorities inadequately relate to their own desires for ministry. This study gives three recommendations to the Salvation Army: First, clear ministry valance. Second, maintaining relationships with officers. Data compiled and assessed in 2001 from 125 married corps officers randomly selected from across the USA Eastern Territory are utilized to structure a Married Officer Leadership seminar for the married officers from the same division. Salvation Army married corps of officers appear to evidence above average marital satisfaction rates and relate positively to the sense of shared vocation and calling. In May 1882 the Church of England inquired about the possibility of the Salvation Army coming under the authority of the Church of England.  One of the irresolvable issues that prevented this union was the sacrament of the Lord's Supper.  By randomly surveying Canadian Salvationists the author discovered that they are neither aware of the historical circumstances surrounding Booth's decision, nor could they articulate its biblical non-sacramental position. The manual which was developed for this purpose was tested at the Salvation Army School for Officers' Training in Chicago, Illinois.  The manual was divided into three sections: 1. development of interpersonal relations; 2. a theological perspective of personality development; and 3. sources for dealing with behavioral difficulties.  The participants consisted of a group of thirteen students who had completed the prerequisite course in Introduction to Psychology and were in their final year of training.  They completed two examinations and several evaluation forms that provided data for the write-up of the project.  Other participants included five outside readers who made observations of the manual from the perspective of their particular expertise.
