It sought through tutelage to improve the cognitive skills of young African American males.  The Sunday school period provided the modus for implementing this module.  The methodology was to pair mentors with pupils, teaching Bible-based principles combined with an analysis of successful African American personalities. African American professional and business persons were also invited to address the group. This exploratory research was conducted to investigate the relationship between self-esteem, socioeconomic attainment and God-concept among African-American Baptists in East Baltimore.  Self-esteem was not shown to have a statistically significant impact on overall socioeconomic attainment. The research method employed grounded theory, which is based on observation and moves from specific incident to general principle.  Exegetical study of Genesis 2:18-25 and Ephesians 5:21-33 concluded that God's intent for marriage was an intimate mutual community. An object relations theory study of marriage revealed that the primary human need to be loved and validated motivates marital interaction. The text includes research and reflection on the theological meanings of personhood, stress, self-esteem and locus of control.  The project employed a treatment effects format, documenting change with scales measuring self-esteem, locus of control and level of stress. Stage One (Attending) examines literature concerning tradition (the doctrine of Imago Dei), experience (the feminist theology of Letty Russell), and culture (the recent work on codependency).  Stage Two (Asserting) posits a shift in the understanding of the doctrine of Imago Dei and develops a theology of self-esteem; and, Stage Three (Acting) describes a thirty-week course designed and tested as a means of systemtic intervention in an Episcopal congregation. The results of this intervention are measured as pre- and posttests by using the Secord-Jourard Self Cathexis Scale and the Gecas 12-item Semantic Differential Scale (both highly reliable and valid instruments). The self-esteem of the congregation increased and the value of the Bible as a resource for continued growth in this area was recognized. The author assisted the selected group in discovering and developing identity as persons. Activities included sermons, seminars, and discussion concerning the awareness of self-esteem. Evaluation involved a pretest/posttest questionnaire, critical observation, and several interviews by the author. The Hudson Index of self-esteem was used as a pretest and posttest for two groups.  Groups A was exposed to the course which included practical instruction in hospital visitation.  Group B was exposed only to the pretest and posttest.  Fifty percent of the Group A participants experienced a signficant increase in their self-esteem level. The methodology can provide teachers effective ways to address student needs and encourage participation in the learning process.  Improved teachers' self-esteem will result from new skill and pastoral support. A three part methodology was designed that allowed teachers freedom to construct lesson plans for their specific class. Three one-hour training sessions introduced teachers to the methodology;  thirteen weeks of on-the-job training completed the training period.  Teachers were able effectively to address student needs, encourage participation, and improve their self-esteem. The concern for service carries out the practices of the Society of Friends (Quakers).  The question studied was the effects of requiring community service.  Pre and post test measures were taken using instruments to measure self-esteem, social and personal responsibility.  Interview and group discussion were used to gather data.  The students in this study showed a significant increase in social and personal responsibility.  Self-esteem did not change significantly.
