Four small groups produced a custom-made lectionary, collected related reference materials, and provided the pastor with weekly exegetical and presentation ideas, supporting materials, and feedback on proposed sermons. The pastor's increase in satisfaction and reduction in frustration with the overall sermon preparation process indicated positive change. This method of sermon preparation was a comprehensive approach integrating the benefits of long-term planning with an extended homiletical method. It mapped out a quarter of the year's preaching calendar and then staggered each sermon's preparation period, stretching it out over weeks instead of days. All of this was done with the hope that each stage of the expository process would be accomplished, and that the overall result would be an expository sermon with increased quality in both design and delivery. The research sought to assess the extent to which long-term sermon preparation increased the sermon quality. The results were incongruent and hence inconclusive. The quantitative research did not strongly support the hypothesis that long-term sermon preparation increases sermon quality in design and delivery. The qualitative assessment, however, did support the hypothesis strongly. The definition is enhanced by examining the elusive, peculiar, prolific and destructive nature of appropriating sermon material without proper acknowledgment. The thesis question is then examined by consulting the contemporary perspectives on pulpit plagiarism. The question is measured against the moral law of God found in scripture and particularly the last three commands of the Decalogue. She decided to look more closely at the process that takes place between reading the text and up to the point of delivering the sermon.  She read the literature to look for different methods to increase and release creativity.  She gathered a group of respondents to listen to and afterwards discuss three of her sermons which she was to prepare using these methods.  Her goal was to see if they could tell any difference in her way of preaching before and after the usage of these methods.  After applying the different methods to her sermon preparation, the focus group could not see any difference, and the author still had her anxiety. Worshipers participated in this contemplative approach to reading Scripture during six midweek Lenten services.  In three months, Sunday worshipers' sermon ratings increased almost one third (32%); this increase is statistically significant (p = .00). The Lectio Divina-style approach was introduced to a second congregation, but without the experiential participation. Study materials included the primary preaching text, along with exegetical and devotional reflections.  Some participants studied the material individually. Others studied it collectively (before a meeting, blogging, small group).  Sermon surveys with both quantitative and qualitative questions measured their responses. The surveys indicated that those who studied the texts ahead of time had a more positive listening experience.
